The Dresden Staatskapelle has a very special tradition of performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It performed the then still highly controversial work for the first time in August 1838 under the baton of Johann Gottlieb Reissiger. Since 1900, the piece has been performed yearly on Palm Sunday, having been popularized by Richard Wagner in 1843
Missa solemnis by Ludwig van Beethoven( )

326 editions published between 1927 and 2020 in 8 languages and held by 9,459 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The performances of the Missa solemnis at the Styriarte Festival in Graz and at the Salzburg Festival in summer 2015 were Nikolaus Harnoncourt's last concerts. After his retirement from the stage later that year, it was Mr. Harnoncourt's express wish that this album, made from the material captured at the Graz concerts and rehearsals, also be his last released recordings. Beethoven's late masterpiece has thus become the final chapter of an unparalleled discography spanning 65 years
Diabelli variations by Ludwig van Beethoven( )

200 editions published between 1968 and 2019 in 5 languages and held by 6,669 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Acknowledged as one of the leading pianists of his generation, an eminent interpreter of the German repertoire, Helmchen explores various periods and composers (including Messiaen!). Before the complete concertos, planned for 2020, he tackles the Diabelli Variations, 'a climax in the life of a pianist'. He sees these variations as 'a voyage to the very heart of the infinity of human feelings and moods, by turns profound, philosophical, satirical'. He regards the cycle as a visionary work that heralds future developments in music, containing the first stirrings of twentieth-century minimalism, atonality and abstraction. This recording is the end result of a long personal association and numerous concerts; a powerful version in which each variation emerges as a masterpiece in its own right

Beethoven as I knew him : a biography by Anton Schindler( Book )

3 editions published between 1840 and 1972 in German and Undetermined and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Violinist and conductor Anton Schindler (1795-1864) became Beethoven's unpaid private secretary for two periods in the 1820s, notably caring for the composer in his last months. Schindler published his biography of Beethoven in 1840, and in 1841 this English translation appeared, with a preface and additional letters provided by the pianist Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870), who in 1814 had prepared the piano version of Fidelio for publication by Artaria. That the biography is unreliable has long been recognised, as it presents Schindler's idealised, romantic view of Beethoven, whom he revered, and contains inaccuracies and fabrications uncovered by later research. While the work must therefore be approached with care, it remains nonetheless an important source of first-hand information through its use of documents unavailable to other early biographers. Volume 1 covers Beethoven's life to the completion of the Ninth Symphony in 1824
