4 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 1,186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the twenty years before World War I, one man almost single-handedly changed the course of American art and photography. That man was Alfred Stieglitz--master photographer, gallery proprietor, publisher, raconteur, philosopher, and critic. This book treats in detail the interaction of Stieglitz and his colleagues, the relationship between European and early American abstract painting, the friendships and travels of the American modernists, the Armory Show and its aftermath, and finally the cultural and social forces that led Stieglitz to close his famous gallery, "291", and to stop publishing his influential magazine, Camera Work

Camera work : a pictorial guide, with reproductions of all 559 illustrations and plates, fully indexed by Alfred Stieglitz ( Book )
6 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 935 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Only examples of such work as gives evidence of individuality and artistic worth, regardless of school, or contains some exceptional feature of technical merit, or such as exemplifies some treatment worthy of consideration, will find recognition in these pages." Alfred Stieglitz kept the promise he made in the first issue of Camera Work. The fifty numbers of this famous and lavishly illustrated periodical, which he edited and published between the years 1903 and 1917, contained some of the finest examples of photography and modernist art. The magazine chronicled the introduction of modern European art into America and was a major force in the fight to have photography accepted as a medium of artistic expression. This volume reproduces chronologically all the photographs and other illustrations (except for advertisements) that ever appeared in Camera Work. Marianne Margolis has written an extensive historical introduction about Stieglitz and the magazine, and prepared three complete indexes of the pictures by title, artist and sitter.--From publisher description
Two lives : Georgia O'Keeffe & Alfred Stieglitz : a conversation in paintings and photographs by Georgia O'Keeffe ( Book )
4 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 735 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Photography historian Belinda Rathbone, the author of a forthcoming biography of the American photographer Walker Evans, looks at the couple's life together from the perspective of Stieglitz who, at the age of fifty-two, was thoroughly rejuvenated when Georgia entered his life. Art historian Elizabeth Hutton Turner examines the relationship from O'Keeffe's point of view. She portrays how a gifted but inexperienced artist came into Stieglitz's world at the age of twenty-nine and in a short space of time evolved from apprentice to collaborator and finally to a leading artist in her own right. As Associate Curator at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., Dr. Turner organized the traveling exhibition that accompanies this book." "Two Lives reproduces the work of both artists with the stunning quality and fidelity for which Callaway books are known. Together, the reproductions and the three essays form a unique account of two lives and two artists."--Jacket

Debating American modernism : Stieglitz, Duchamp, and the New York avant-garde by Debra Bricker Balken ( Book )
3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 460 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"From the crossfire between Marcel Duchamp and Alfred Stieglitz and their respective circles there emerged what Debra Bricker Balken calls "a critical reformulation of modernism, one that imprinted the direction of subsequent American art." Balken traces the fascinating threads of the debate between Duchamp and Stieglitz and their respective camps through the 1910s and '20s, and also addresses the sexualized imagery that appears in nearly all of these artists' works, a phenomenon that ironically unifies the two seemingly opposed factions. Jay Bochner provides an absorbing analysis of the artists' respective violations of American expectations about art." "Debating American Modernism includes reproductions of work by artists from both factions, from Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Paul Strand to Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and Marsden Hartley, as well as by a group who melded the concerns of each, among them, Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler, John Storrs, and Stuart Davis."--BOOK JACKET
