Gallavan demonstrates how performance-based assessments (PBAs) can help create stimulating teaching and learning environments in elementary classrooms." 11 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Principals from the 1991-1992 Blue Ribbon Schools--those schools selected by the U.S. Department of Education that have demonstrated an unusual ability to create an atmosphere that promotes learning for "everyone"--Were asked to share a "best idea" that they had put into practice in their schools. Selected from over 100 submissions, the "best ideas" illustrate new or unique approaches to school issues in the categories of: strengthening curriculum content; educating for citizenship and character; implementing cooperative learning; making the best use of technology; involving parents; encouraging teacher professionalism; building community-school/business-school partnerships; helping students who are at-risk and preventing drop-outs; restructuring efforts and school improvement; and even more "best ideas" (a potpourri of ideas that don't fit any of the categories listed). The foreword was written by the U.S. Secretary of Education, Richard W. Riley and the introduction was written by Samuel G. Sava, Executive Director of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. A list of the 1991-1992 Blue Ribbon Elementary and Middle Schools is included. (Aa)

Overcoming obesity in childhood and adolescence : a guide for school leaders by Donald Schumacher( Book )

3 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

School principals, school district leaders, and the educational community are currently being inundated with information from multiple sources about the "child obesity epidemic." According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of overweight children and adolescents has nearly tripled during the past 20 years, with the consequence that "policymakers, health officials, and interest groups are now pressuring schools to provide students with healthier meals and snacks and more time for physical activity during the school day" (Education Week, July 29, 2004). What school leaders do not yet have, however, is a clear and authoritative overview of the subject that can help them navigate their way through the often contradictory recommendations and "cupcake controversies" confronting them. This state-of-the-art guide for principals and district leaders, written by an educator and a physician specializing in child obesity, provides that overview, along with a targeted discussion of the "Do's," "Don'ts," and "Can'ts" that school leaders need to keep in mind when creating and implementing new school policies for student (and staff) nutrition, fitness, and health
