Situado Valle-Inclán en la encrucijada nacional e internacional tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, observa que por todas partes prevalece lo grotesco. 'La tragedia nuestra no es tragedia', le dice Max Estrella a Don Latino en 'Luces de bohemia', lo que da como resultado -añade Max Estrella- 'el esperpento', una invención artístico-literaria que es atribuida a Goya. Esa tragedia que no es tragedia es la tragedia del español que vive sin grandeza, sin heroicidades, sin altura de miras, en un momento en el que España se hallaba fuera de las corrientes sociales, políticas, económicas e ideológicas de su entorno europeo: "España es una deformación grotesca de la civilización europea". Solo con la forma estética del esperpento, basada en la deformación sistemática, puede representarse la tragedia no tragedia de España. Pero en 'Luces de bohemia', el esperpento que en un principio iba a girar en torno a un bohemio, un marginado, se topa con la realidad y su protagonista toma conciencia de ella, dando sentido y proyección estética y social al esperpento
