Hitler's commanders : officers of the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe, the Kriegsmarine, and the Waffen-SS by Samuel W Mitcham( )

17 editions published between 1992 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,291 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Despite huge odds against them, Hitler's commanders- the elite of the Wehrmacht- almost succeeded in conquering Europe. Now in an expanded edition that includes biographies of the generals of Stalingrad and a new chapter on the panzer commanders, this book offers rare insight into the men who ran Nazi Germany's war machine. Going beyond common stereotypes, Samuel W. Mitcham and Gene Mueller recount the compelling lives of a varied group of army, navy, Luftwaffe, and SS men, including their early life, their military exploits during the war, and their post-war career, if any. Weaving in dramatic stories of tank commanders, fighter pilots in aerial combat, and U-Boat aces, the authors bring the battlefields of World War II to life

Wilhelm Keitel : Chief of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, 1938-1945 by Gene Mueller( )

6 editions published between 1972 and 1987 in English and German and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Wilhelm Keitel entered the German officer corps prior to World War I and rose through the ranks to become, in 1938, chief of the high command of the German armed forces. Even though he rapidly attained success and limited power, he regretted that he was never able to manage the family estate at Helmscherode in Hannover. Nevertheless, his position as chief of the OKW cast him into a direct working relationship with Adolf. Hitler. Keitel very quickly succumbed to the evil genius of Hitler. While the chief OKW occasionally defended the traditions of the German officer corps, he all too often merely echoed his Fuehrer's commands. His apparent subservience to Hitler has been interpreted by many as illustrative of total submission of his individual will to National Socialism. This interpretation needs to be corrected. First of all, Keitel's authority was not as extensive as his position, chief OKW, might have indicated. Secondly, the chief OKW's extreme emphasis on duty and obedience blinded him to the many evils of Nazi Germany. And this almost compulsive obedience caused him to acquiesce to the tyrant's will ... Wilhelm Keitel was miscast in the Third Reich. He simply did not have the strength of character to deal with the tyrant Hitler. And yet, the Fuehrer would only have tolerated a person such as Keitel. Thus, the field marshal, who throughout his career displayed the characteristics of an 'adjutant, ' was appointed to a position, the chief of the high command of the German armed forces, that contained neither command nor authority. Instead, Keitel was belabored by everyone and became a scapegoat for critics of the Third Reich"--Abstract

As absolute as Hitler's control over the German war machine was, it depended on the ability, judgment and unquestioning loyalty of the senior officers charged with putting his ideas, however difficult, into effect.Top military historian James Lucas examines the stories of fourteen of these men: all of different rank, from varied backgrounds, and highly awarded, they exemplify German military prowess at its most dangerous. Among his subjects are Eduard Dietl, the commander of German forces in Norway and Eastern Europe; Werner Kampf, one of the most successful Panzer commanders of the war; and K
