A combination of facts, examples, models, tools, and sources useful in developing and teaching word processing (wp) programs is provided in this guide. Eight sections are included. Sections 1 and 2 present introductory information on wp (E.G., history, five phases of wp, problems occurring in wp offices, factors of people, procedures, and equipment, and the future of wp) and information on wp as it relates to office careers (E.G., way in which wp is organized, degree of wp implementation, work environments, and wp jobs and career paths). Sections 3 through 6 provide information on competencies, learning activities, curriculum models, and special needs students. Sections 7 and 8 include tools and resources to help develop and teach wp programs. This curriculum guide has been designed to provide the teacher with a basis for planning a comprehensive program in the career field of universal teller, and to allow the teacher and learner maximum flexibility. The teaching or instruction, in both educational and financial institutions, can be accomplished through large formal groups, small groups, or individual instruction. The competency-based guide is intended to serve persons of diverse abilities, aptitudes, interests, and cultural backgrounds. The curriculum guide is a vocationally oriented system designed to meet the needs of persons who have entered or are preparing to enter finance and credit careers requiring competencies as a universal teller, including the following: mathematics, business English, machine skills, promotion of services, filing, and management. Each skill/task is developed into a goal format with a stated objective, resources identified, and an evaluation procedure to determine competence. Goals are not sequenced, and learning/instruction format can be varied to meet individual or group needs. The eight sections of the curriculum guide cover general skills, communications, human relations/customer relations, mathematics/drawer transactions, machince skills, security and prevention, and resources. Intended for use at Eastern Illinois University in a model curriculum designed to prepare secondary school teachers in the field of residential building, this curriculum guide provides a competency-based preservice construction trades program. The guide is divided into thirteen units as follows: (1) pre-construction planning; (2) structural layout, incorporating clearing the site and topographic alterations; (3) building foundation; (4) forming, placing, and finishing concrete; (5) carpentry to frame the structure; (6) carpentry to enclose the structure; (7) plumbing; (8) heating and cooling; (9) electrical wiring; (10) carpentry to finish the interior, including thermal insulation; (11) painting and finishing of both the interior and exterior; (12) mechanical trades to complete the plumbing, heating and cooling, and electrical power; and (13) landscape design. Within each of the thirteen units, one or more sub-units are identified and specific performance objectives are given. A condition statement prefaces the listing of objective statements for each section. The types of learning activities used to attain the objectives vary from written exercises to the physical performance of the building tasks. Included at the end are an extensive bibliography of resource materials in printed and audiovisual formats and a list of resource organizations.
