Measures of occupational attitudes and occupational characteristics : (Appendix A to Measures of political attitudes) by
John P Robinson(
Book
)
8 editions published between 1969 and 1974 in English and held by 464 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The purpose of this monograph is to provide researchers with a systematic review and evaluation of the major empirical measures relevant to the study of variables related to a person's occupation. Particular attention is focused on measurement scales, that is, series of attitude items that attempt to measure the same attitude content. The introductory chapter discusses the background of the project and the major criteria used in evaluating the 77 scales. Chapters 2-4 deal with reviews of research on job satisfaction: Historical perspective, cross-sectional studies, and predictability. Other chapters deal with the scales themselves: General Job Satisfaction Scales; Job Satisfaction for Particular Occupations; Satisfaction with Specific Job Features; Factors from some Multidimensional Analyses of Job Satisfaction; Concepts Related to Job Satisfaction; Occupational Values; Leadership Styles; Other Work-Relevant Attitudes; Vocational Interest Measures; Occupational Status Measures; Status Inconsistency: Some Conceptual and Methodological Considerations; Occupational Status; and Social Mobility. Chapter 18 summarizes the evidence of the previous four under the general heading of occupational similarity. Appendix b is ed 053 031; Measures of Political Attitudes is ed 053 032. (Author/DJB)

Use of licit and illicit drugs by America's high school students, 1975-1984 by
Lloyd Johnston(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Two of the major topics treated in this report are the current prevalence of drug use among American high school seniors, and trends in use since 1975. Also reported are data on school grade of first use, trends in use at earlier grade levels, intensity of drug use, attitudes and beliefs among seniors concerning various types of drug use, and their perceptions of certain relevant aspects of the social environment. The eleven separate classes of drugs distinguished are marijuana (including hashish), inhalants, hallucinogens, cocaine, heroin, natural and synthetic opiates other than heroin, stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers, alcohol, and cigarettes. Separate statistics are also presented here for several sub-classes of drugs: pcp and lsd, barbiturates and methaqualone, and amyl and butyl nitrites. Occasions of medically supervised use of the psychotherapeutic drugs were excluded. Attention was focused on high frequency levels of drug use and an indirect measure of dosage per occasion was introduced to differentiate levels of drug use. The "Other Findings" section includes data on the use of non-prescription stimulants, daily marijuana use, effects of post high school environments and role transitions on drug use, and the issue of distinguishing maturational change from period effects and class cohort differences. Findings are supported by numerous tables. (Author/MCK)

The determinants of neighborhood quality : an analysis of the 1976 Annual housing survey by
Robert W Marans(
)
2 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Recent empirical research has demonstrated that neighborhood quality is associated with residents' evaluation of specific attributes of their housing environment. This paper uses the 1976 Annual Housing Survey to assess the contributions to overall neighborhood quality of people's evaluations of environmental conditions and public services. It considers 1) the extent to which the presence or absence of conditions influences ratings of neighborhoods, 2) the relative importance of conditions and service evaluations in explaining overall neighborhood ratings, and 3) the extent to which the evaluations in households with different background characteristics differ in importance in explaining overall neighborhood ratings
