American renaissance : art and expression in the age of Emerson and Whitman by F. O Matthiessen( Book )

168 editions published between 1941 and 2011 in 6 languages and held by 3,165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

American Renaissance has taken its place as the definitive treatment of that most distinguished age of our literature. Centering his discussion around five of its literary giants--Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville, and Whitman--Matthiessen elucidates their conceptions of nature and the function of literature, and the extent to which these were realized in their writings. The breadth of the book lies in the author's use of the five-year period from 1850 to 1855 as a focal point in interpreting what went before and what followed in the development of our prose and poetry. The masterpieces produced in this one extraordinarily concentrated moment of expression, and fully explored in these pages, include Representative Men, Walden, The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, Moby-Dick, Pierre, and Leaves of Grass

The complete notebooks of Henry James by Henry James( Book )

56 editions published between 1947 and 1981 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,919 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book includes the nine scribbler-notebooks that were published by Oxford in 1947 ; these have been considerably updated and annotated to correct the identification of stories developed by James from his various notes and to reveal many noted Victorians James concealed through the use of their initials. Certain omitted portions of the notebooks have also been restored. This volume is especially noteworthy for the body of new material (over 20,000 words) that it contains. It includes a series of James's pocket diaries in which, amid appointments and luncheon dates, he jotted down observations and ideas for his fiction and commented on his personal relations. Also here are some fugitive dictated notes, in which James offered an autobiographical meditation on the "turning point" in his life and the "working out" of a story based on a passion murder by the American acquaintance in the south of France. James's long out-of-print statements for his unfinished novels The Ivory Tower and The Sense of the Past, scenarios for unfinished plays, the writer's deathbed dictation - all these are here as well. Also included is a long outline of The Ambassadors and jacket cover notes that are now identified as James's own writing. An appendix contains a substantial, and previously unpublished, fragment of Hugh Merrow, a story he never completed, and the book even provides insight into James's "cash accounts". Everywhere throughout the collection, in writings never intended for the public eye, the artist is seen at work. His private prayers to his Good Angel and exhortations to himself make exhilarating reading."--Inside jacket cover

Henry James, the major phase by F. O Matthiessen( Book )

50 editions published between 1944 and 1999 in English and held by 1,779 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Throughout this volume a study is made of the technique evolved by James to communicate his themes. The gradation of moral awareness in the characters, their dramatic juxtaposition, and the construction of patters of imagery are analyzed to reveal the depth of James' mature work. A final chapter on Portrait of a lady examines James' revisions of this earlier novel as it was reconceived to conform to the style and thought of his "major phase"

"First published in 1970, Warren's edition remains the most comprehensive selection of Melville's poetry ever presented. It brings together the best of the Civil War poems from Battle-Pieces (1866), the portraits of sailors from John Marr (1888), and the autumnal lyrics from Timoleon (1891), as well as poems uncollected during Melville's lifetime. Central to the selection are several self-contained passages from Clarel: A Poem and Pilgrimage to the Holy Land (1876), a book-length work that Warren calls "an important document of our modernity ... in fact, a precursor to The Waste Land, with the same central image, the same flickering contrasts of the past and the present, the same charade of belief and unbelief."" "Warren introduces his selection with a valuable interpretive essay, and also provides copious textual and critical notes."--Jacket

Racconti di artisti by Henry James( Book )

1 edition published in 2005 in Italian and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
