This study contains data on national attributes and international interactions for 114 nations in the 1960s. Containing data originally collected by the International Relations Program at Syracuse University, this learning package was developed to provide an introduction to comparative foreign policy analyses and a discussion of how to employ rigorous techniques to develop ideas about the causes and consequences of foreign policy. Data are provided for economic, political, domestic, and international interaction indicators. Included for each nation is information on the gross national product (GNP), level of trade, military expenditures, type of political system, character of political regime, size of diplomatic missions, population size, sociocultural classifications, alliance bloc memberships, number of contiguous countries, voting agreements with the United States, the Soviet Union, and India, the degree of support for the United Nations, and the number of cooperative or conflictual acts sent to and received from the United States, the Soviet Union, the region, and outside the region ... These data are a time series of forty-six cases, 1869-1914, consisting of one hundred thirty-four variables recording information on various aspects of the British economy. Variables include raw values, nine-year moving averages, deviations from the average, and deviations from the linear trend for such quantities as British investment abroad, British gross domestic fixed capital, British exports and imports to the British Empire and to other parts of the world, and the number of British alliances. Data were collected from the most recent available studies in economic history, econometrics, and political science. This data collection contains event/interaction data characterizing over 13,000 events related to affairs in Southern Africa between 1973 and 1976. An event/interaction is defined in this study as an activity undertaken by an international or transnational actor wherein it may be inferred that the actor has undertaken the activity in order to affect the behavior of the target of the event. The actor or target is defined as one of nine core states (Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Rhodesia, Malawi, South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland), 17 liberation movements within those states (e.g., the ANC, MPLA, and FNLA), seven Bantu homelands (Bophutha Tswana, Ciskei, Ganzankulu, Kwazulu, Lebowa, Transkei, and Vhavenda), five peripheral African powers (Zaire, Tanzania, Zambia, Malagasy Republic, and Mauritius), 11 non-African powers "intrusive" in the region (United States, Brazil, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Portugal, West Germany, Soviet Union, China, Japan, and Cuba), and eight international organizations (e.g., NATO, EEC, and OAU).
