The U.S. Army Research Laboratory has recently made discoveries in the area of interior ballistic propellant combustion product interactions with a gun-tube bore. These discoveries were based on two hypotheses. The first was that the products could and are dynamically nitriding the bore of the gun, thus creating a nitride coating which inhibits the dissociation of CO and subsequently reduces the amount of carbon uptake. The second was that the combustion products richer in nitrogen have a lower temperature upon expansion in our experimental fixture as well as in a gun barrel. This is due to Joule and/or Joule-Thomson cooling effects. Both of these hypotheses were proven and validated through numerical and experimental methods. Higher nitrogen containing combustion products have definitively been shown to have relatively lower erosivity with respect to those having lower nitrogen content. These results have revolutionized the gun propellant development community in that for the first time, there is guidance for erosivity control through propellant chemical constituent formulation

Nanotechnology offers the ability to create new material systems as well as dramatically improve the performance of existing systems through the introduction of new physical mechanisms not found in the original material. Nanomaterial modification of fibers and textiles has been used to increase fabric performance in areas ranging from biocidal capability to stain resistance and water repellency. In this study we use scalable methods to modify nanoscale features on organic materials to probe the potential for increased impact energy absorption and mechanical properties in composite applications. Specifically atmospheric plasma treatment and wetchemistry methods were utilized to create nanoscale chemical scaffolding and surface textures on model polyethylene films and fibers. This approach was successful at modifying the surfaces of these fibers and scaling to high speed web manufacturing is easily envisioned

Ion beam enhanced deposition (IBED) has been used to deposit hard, adherent thin films of boron nitride with a significant cubic crystal structure present. A number of analytical techniques have been used to characterize these coatings including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); X-ray diffraction (XRD); transmission electron microscopy (TEM); Raman spectroscopy; nuclear radiation analysis (NRA); Rutherford Backscattering spectroscopy (RBS); and IR spectroscopy. Friction and wear behavior of these coatings was also conducted. The IBED-i-BN thin films generally exhibit a high microhardness and good adhesion to the silicon and 304 stainless steel substrates. All films (except one) had the hyperstoichiometric boron concentration. The ration Boron/Nitride approached the theoretical value at the highest current densities of the nitrogen beam. Many of the i-BN coatings exhibited low friction against 440 C stainless steel and Silicon nitride counterfaces. Friction seems to increase with increasing B/N ratios. There is a strong demand for diamond-like coatings of boron nitride (BN) in a large number of tribological applications including cryogenic bearings and adiabatic engines. Commercial use of BN coatings has previously been impeded by sample to sample reproducibility problems which have been overcome by the innovative Spire process using ion beam enhanced deposition (IBED). Preliminary Evaluation of Ion Implantation as a Surface Treatment to Reduce Wear of Tool Bits( Book )

The process of ion implantation is reviewed and concepts for use as a surface hardening technique for extending the life of machine tools are explored. It is concluded that for high speed steel tool materials a system based on implantation of Ti ions with subsequent reaction to form TiC in the surface layers should have merit. Exploratory tests showed that in machining tests of 4140 steel, an implanted M2 lathe tool bit required about 10 percent less power and has a wear rate approximately one-half that of the unimplanted tool. Tests of end mills proved inconclusive because the optimum Ti level for the implant was not reached. (Author)
