Conflict and political change in Venezuela by Daniel H Levine( )

17 editions published between 1973 and 2016 in English and Spanish and held by 1,316 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Venezuela has had a long and bloody history of military dictatorships. Yet, since 1958, it has developed one of the few effective, competitive democracies in Latin America. To explain this transformation Daniel H. Levine analyzes the development of modern mass-based political parties with pervasive organizations and commanding strong loyalties; the changing structure and content of social and political conflict; and the gradual emergence of common norms governing political behavior. This book does not pretend to be a general survey of Venezuelan politics. Rather, it is an attempt to understa
Popular voices in Latin American Catholicism by Daniel H Levine( )

18 editions published between 1992 and 2016 in English and Spanish and held by 1,280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Throughout Latin America, observers and activists have found in religion a promise of deep and long-lasting democratization. But for religion to change culture and politics, religion itself must change. Such change is not only a matter of doctrine, ritual, or institutional arrangements but also arises out of the needs, values, and ideas of average believers. Combining rich interviews and community studies in Venezuela and Colombia with analysis of broad ideological and institutional transformations, Daniel Levine examines how religious and cultural change begins and what gives it substance

The morality of peacekeeping by Daniel H Levine( )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 846 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

International peacekeeping is one of the primary ways that global and regional institutions, such as the United Nations and the African Union, respond to conflict, violence, instability, and human rights abuses. This book outlines a moral structure for peacekeeping centred on the idea that peacekeepers are there to manage violence (both that of parties to the conflict and their own) in such a way to permit a damaged political community to heal itself

The quality of democracy in Latin America by Daniel H Levine( Book )

9 editions published between 2007 and 2011 in English and held by 421 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In considering the nature and future prospects of the current wave of democracies in Latin America, analysis has shifted from a concern with regime change, transitions, and consolidation to a focus on the quality of these democracies. To what extent, for example, do citizens participate and influence decisionmaking? Are elections free and fair? Are there ways of ensuring government accountability? Do unelected power brokers exert undue influence? Furthering this new approach, the authors provide a rich, nuanced analysis, centered on a multidimensional theoretical foundation, of democratic systems in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela

Excellent bibliographies accompany all of the articles"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57
Civic education and peacebuilding : examples from Iraq and Sudan by Daniel H Levine( )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Civic education provides a positive framework for collective civic identity. As such, it can be a stabilizing factor in societies suffering from violent conflict and its aftermath. The emphasis of civic education on public participation in governance overlaps with human rights, but the two fields have distinct and separate conceptual bases. Postconflict environments create several severe challenges for educators. Some of these challenges are particularly difficult for civic education programs and must be addressed as such programs are developed. Classroom techniques are a crucial part of civic education because they impart skills as well as knowledge; both are necessary features of successful civic participation. USIP experiences with civic education programming in Iraq and Sudan illustrate the challenges and rewards of developing effective, sustainable models of civic education in areas recovering from violence. Such programs require local engagement, flexibility, patience, and long-term commitment
Region-building in Africa : political and economic challenges by Daniel H Levine( )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This landmark book is the first of its kind to assess the challenges of African region-building and regional integration across all five African sub-regions and more than five decades of experience, considering both political and economic aspects. Leading scholars and practitioners come together to analyze a range of entwined topics, including: the theoretical underpinnings that have informed Africa's regional integration trajectory; the political economy of integration, including the sources of different 'waves' of integration in pan-Africanism and the reaction to neo-liberal economic pressures; the complexities of integration in a context of weak states and the informal regionalization that often occurs in 'borderlands'; the increasing salience of Africa's relationships with rising extra-regional economic powers, including China and India; and comparative lessons from non-African regional blocs, including the EU, ASEAN, and the Southern Common Market. A core argument of this book, running through all chapters, is that region-building must be recognized as a political project as much as if not more than an economic one; successful region-building in Africa will need to include the complex political tasks of strengthening state capacity (including states' capacity as 'developmental states' that can actively engage in economic planning), resolving long-standing conflicts over resources and political dominance, improving democratic governance, and developing trans-national political structures that are legitimate and inclusive
