SARS : a case study in emerging infections by Angela McLean( )

13 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,696 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"SARS: a case study in emerging infections provides an up-to-date and accessible overview of the tasks that must be addressed by a community that wishes to confront emerging infections. Each chapter is written by a world expert and offers an authoritative and timely overview of its subject. While focusing on SARS, the book addresses a whole range of pertinent considerations and issues, from the use of new mathematical models to account for the spread of infection across global airline networks, to a discussion of the ethics of quarantining individuals in order to protect communities. The book will be of interest to students, academics, and policy makers working in the fields of disease ecology, medicine, and public health."--Jacket

Metal-organic and organic molecular magnets by Royal Society (Great Britain)( )

5 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 1,293 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traditionally, magnetic materials have been metals or, if inorganic compounds such as oxides, of continuous lattice type. However, in recent years chemists have synthesized increasing numbers of crystalline solids based on molecular building blocks in the form of coordination and organometallic complexes or purely organic molecules, which exhibit spontaneous magnetization. In striking contrast to conventional magnets, these materials are made from solutions close to room temperature rather than by metallurgical or ceramic methods. This book, which originates from contributions to a Discussion Meeting of The Royal Society of London, brings together many of the leading international practitioners in the field, who survey their own recent work and place it in the context of the wider fields of magnetism and supramolecular chemistry. All aspects of molecular-based magnets are addressed, including synthesis, structure-property relations and physical properties. Contents include details of the characterization of the first purely organic ferromagnet, the synthesis of high coercivity materials and a unique description of new materials with Curie temperatures well above ambient. A coherent survey of this rapidly developing field for the more general reader, Metal-Organic and Organic Molecular Magnets will also be welcomed by researchers and lecturers in materials science and inorganic or solid state chemistry
Advances in astronomy : from the big bang to the solar system by J. M. T Thompson( )

8 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this highly accessible book, leading scientists from around the world give a general overview of research advances in their subject areas within the field of Astronomy. They describe some of their own cutting-edge research and give their visions of the future. Re-written in a popular and well-illustrated style, the articles are mainly derived from scholarly and authoritative papers published in special issues of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions, the world's longest running scientific journal. Carefully selected by the journal's editor, topics include the Big Bang creation of t
The activities of bacterial pathogens in vivo : based on contributions to a Royal Society discussion meeting, London, UK : meeting held on 20-21 October 1999 by Harry Smith( )

9 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 1,221 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pathogenic bacteria have unique biological properties, which enable them to invade a host and cause sickness. The molecular bases of these biological properties are the determinants of pathogenicity, and the research objectives are to recognize them, identify them chemically and relate their structure to function. Most of our present knowledge comes from studies with cultures in vitro. However, there is a rising interest in bacterial behaviour in the infected host and new methods have been developed for studying it. This book describes those methods and shows how they, and a recent sur

Scientific discourse in sociohistorical context : the Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society of London, 1675-1975 by Dwight Atkinson( )

7 editions published between 1999 and 2010 in English and held by 1,123 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Scientific Discourse in Sociohistorical Context represents the intersection of knowledge and method, examined from the perspectives of three distinct disciplines: linguistics, rhetoric/composition, and history. Herein, Dwight Atkinson describes the written language and rhetoric of the Royal Society of London, based on his analysis of its affiliated journal, The Philosophical Transactions, starting with the 17th-century advent of modern empirical science and continuing through to the present day. Atkinson adopts two independent approaches to the analysis of written discourse from the fields of linguistics and rhetoric/composition, and then integrates and interprets his findings in light of the history of the Royal Society and British science
Changes and disturbance in tropical rainforest in South-east Asia by T. H Clutton-Brock( )

8 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 1,051 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Views on the dynamics of tropical forests are changing rapidly with the recognition that their environment is variable on the decadal to century scale. Fluctuating climatic conditions partly determine tropical forest structure, species composition and dynamics. Tropical communities are also highly contingent in space and time with respect to site and historical factors. Tropical forests have experienced to some degree this disturbance regime in the past, but climatologists are now predicting increasingly frequent extreme events in the new century. The combination of increasing deforestation an
