Mechanization for rural development : a review of patterns and progress from around the world by Josef Kienzle( )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 671 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This publication gives a wide-ranging perspective on the present state of mechanization in the developing world, and, as such, constitutes a solid platform on which to build strategies for a sustainable future. Farm mechanization forms an integral plank in the implementation of sustainable crop production intensification methodologies and sustainable intensification necessarily means that the protection of natural resources and the production of ecosystem services go hand-in-hand with intensified production practices. This requires specific mechanization measures to allow crops to be established with minimum soil disturbance, to allow the soil to be protected under organic cover for as long as possible, and to establish crop rotations and associations to feed the soil and to exploit crop nutrients from various soil horizons. This work is the starting point to help the reader understand the complexities and requirements of the task ahead."--Publisher's description

FAO/WHO framework for the provision of scientific advice on food safety and nutrition by Food and Agricultural Organization( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document has been prepared to enhance the transparency of the practices and procedures applied by FAO and WHO to deliver scientific advice. It illustrates that the same basic principles and rules apply to the different expert groups such as the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), the Joint FAO/WHO Expert meetings on Pesticide Residues (JMPR), the Joint FAO/WHO Expert meetings on Microbiological Risk Assessment (JEMRA) and consultations and meeting organized in response to specific ad hoc requests or emergency situations--Publisher's description

Agricultural mechanization in sub-Saharan Africa : guidelines for preparing a strategy by Karim Houmy( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 47 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The manual work carried out by farmers and their families is often both arduous and time consuming and in many countries this is a major constraint to increasing agricultural production. Such day to day drudgery is a major contributory factor in the migration of people, particularly the young, from the rural countryside to seek the prospect of a better life in the towns and cities. Farm production can be substantially increased through the use of mechanical technologies which are both labour saving and directly increase yields and production. The necessary inputs are carefully selected tools, machines, and equipment. Such technological interventions are commonly referred to as agricultural mechanization and a judicious choice is crucial for farmers to achieve optimum profitability from their businesses and to attain an acceptable quality of life for themselves and their families. The choice can also have a major impact on the environment; only the use of those which have a positive effect can be sustainable over the long term. It is therefore important to identify appropriate mechanization strategies with particular emphasis on increased production, farmers' livelihoods, and environmentally sustainable options. This document provides guidelines on the development and formulation of an agricultural mechanization strategy and forms part of FAO's approach on sustainable production intensification."--Publisher's description
An international technical workshop investing in sustainable crop intensification : the case for improving soil health, FAO, Rome: 22-24 July 2008 by Workshop on Investing in Sustainable Crop Intensification: The Case for Improving Soil Health( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is a report of a workshop that brought together people from a wide range of institutions - farmers, researchers, extensionists, policy makers, donors - from 40 countries who share a common concern about the non-sustainability of ways in which farm land is now being used and who are convinced that this must change. The workshop focused on the growing evidence of success in the adoption and spread of Conservation Agriculture (CA) in developing countries. CA-based approaches to sustainable production intensification are highly relevant to the global response to rising food and energy prices, increasing soil and environmental degradation, pervasive rural poverty, climate change and increasing water scarcity. The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the workshop presentations.--Publisher's description

Green manure/cover crops and crop rotation in conservation agriculture on small farms by Miguel Angel Florentín( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The objective of this publication is to offer a reference material for extensionists, professors, agronomy students, technicians in general, and for farmers themselves ... it strives to facilitate the adoption and diffusion of no-tillage, the use of green manures, and the practice of crop rotation on small farms. The publication describes the principal species of green manures and, at the same time, informs in detail how to insert green manures into small farm production systems according to soil fertility and major crops. It also deals with the residual effect of green manures on main crops and analyzes the economic implications of these practices."--Page 4 of cover
