This is Maria Callas's only broadcast from the stage of the Met. Hearing "La Divina" in an actual performance is a unique thrill, and Lucia is a huge part of the palpable Callas mystique. Donizetti's bloody tale of the Scottish lass torn from her true love and forced into an arranged marriage, only to go mad and murder her bridegroom on their wedding night, was the perfect vehicle for Callas's wizardry. Her haunting voice simply becomes Lucia's--every facet of emotion so pronounced that we cannot escape her spell

Lucrezia Borgia by Gaetano Donizetti( Recording )

161 editions published between 1897 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 1,579 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on Victor Hugo's most sensational play, 'Lucrece Borgia', a scandalous tale of murder, torture, incest, homosexuality, drunkenness and orgies, Donizetti's opera is one of the great masterpieces of Italian 'bel canto' repertoire. While omitting some of its more excessive elements, the libretto by Felice Romani inspired Donizetti to compose superb arias, duets, ensembles and choruses, bringing each act to a stirring conclusion. Brimming with high drama and pathos, this production stars Greek diva Dimitra Theodossiou in the infamous title role, praised for her stupendous acting and singing as England's Queen Elizabeth I in Donizetti's 'Roberto Devereux'

This spectacular cast makes any listener wonder why such a marvelous, colorful opera isn't much better known. Sensational Shirley Verrett is Leonora, the beautiful, mysterious lady who so completely captures the heart of the monk Fernando (Luciano Pavarotti at his finest) that he forsakes his calling to defeat the Moors in battle in order to win her hand. Alas, she is the mistress of the king (Sherrill Milnes), who is so besotted with her he is determined to defy the pope himself to make Leonora his queen. It's a tragic opera, so no one wins--except the audience

Don Pasquale : a comic opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti( Book )

Act two: In the second act, Dr. Malatesta brings in his "sister," heavily veiled, and presents her to Don Pasquale. When at last she can be induced to lift her veil, Pasquale is overwhelmed with delight and urges an immediate marriage. To this Norina bashfully consents. A fake notary is brought in, but just as the contract is about to be signed, Ernesto returns to say goodbye to his uncle. He is horrified to recognize Norina, but she and the doctor manage to explain matters and prevail upon him to witness the document. The notary leaves. Instantly, Norina's manner changes. She repulses Pasquale severely, summons the servants and doubles their wages, increases the staff, orders quantities of new furniture, clothes, jewels, horses and carriages -- all with the admonition that none but the best will do. When Pasquale protests, she reminds him that she is now mistress of the house and that what she says, goes. As the curtain falls, the Don is choking with rage, Norina and Ernesto are thoroughly enjoying the comedy, and the doctor is ordering his feverish patient to get a good night's sleep. - Flyleaf

"In a feud between the Scottish families of Ravenswood and Lammermoor, Enrico has gained the upper hand over Edgardo, murdering his kinsmen and usurping his estates. By the time of the opera's action, in the late 17th century, Enrico's fortunes have begun to wane; in political disfavor, he stakes all on uniting his family with that of Arturo, whom he means to force his sister, Lucia, to marry."--Container
