Towards a poor theatre by Jerzy Grotowski( Book )

50 editions published between 1968 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 795 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1968, Jerzy Grotowski published his groundbreaking Towards a Poor Theatre, a record of the theatrical investigations conducted at his experimental theater in Poland. This classic work on acting and performance is now available once again. In his preface to the original edition, Peter Brook wrote: "Grotowski is unique. Why? Because no one else in the world, to my knowledge no one since Stanislavski, has investigated the nature of acting, its phenomenon, its meaning, the nature and science of its mental-physical-emotional processes as deeply as Grotowski." More recently, Richard Schechner has called Grotowski "one of the four great directors of Western theater." Jerzy Grotowski was born in Poland in 1933. In 1982 he moved to the United States and worked at the University of California. He later moved to Italy, where he continued his unique and intense theatrical investigation. He died in 1999"--Publisher description
The secret art of the performer : a dictionary of theatre anthropology by Eugenio Barba( Book )

15 editions published between 1991 and 2005 in English and held by 700 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A Dictionary of Theatre Anthropology juxtaposes visual demonstrations of the performer's craft, from a wealth of Eastern and Western sources. More than just a dictionary, this is a handbook for theatre practitioners and a guide for students and scholars of transcultural performance. It is the result of many years of research conducted by Eugenio Barba and the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) based in Denmark, and is now a classic foundational text. Whereas most Western research is concerned with naturalism and psychological realism in acting, the Dictionary focuses on the actor's arduous and eclectic craft. The Dictionary aims to expand our knowledge of the possibilities of the scenic body, and of the spectator's response to the dynamics of performance." "Containing over 650 photographs and diagrams, this illustrated and entirely original sourcebook on Western and non-Western theatre is a tribute to the secret art of the performer."--Jacket
The paper canoe : a guide to theatre anthropology by Eugenio Barba( Book )

20 editions published between 1993 and 2005 in English and held by 624 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Eugenio Barba, director, theorist and founder of Odin Teatret, is today one of the major points of reference for contemporary theatre. The Paper Canoe is the first major study of theatre anthropology; it distils all the research of ISTA, the International School of Theatre Anthropology, and focuses upon the pre-expressive level of the performer's art. Barba defines this as the basic technique which creates 'presence' on stage; a dilated and effective body which can hold and guide a spectator's attention." "The Paper Canoe alternates between detached analysis and the observations of an ardent traveller who reveals the value of theatre as a discipline and a revolt. It comprises a fascinating dialogue with the masters of Asian performance and the makers of twentieth-century theatre, such as Stanislavski, Meyerhold, Craig, Copeau, Brecht, Artaud and Decroux, making their thoughts and techniques accessible and relevant to contemporary practice." "The Paper Canoe establishes beyond doubt the importance of Barba's practical and theoretical work for today's students and practitioners of performance."--BOOK JACKET

Kaosmos by Peter Sykes( Visual )

8 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in Danish and English and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A village in the heart of Europe. Sickles harvest the corn and feet trample it. We are witnessing a world which ends happily, amidst some weeping and some melancholy, but above all with an insane self-confidence. It is a fascinating and sensuous village whose inhabitants are clothed in garments of the richest colours and textures, with ornamental hairstyles which are only to be seen in illustrations of ancient folklore or in books of fables. But this book of fables is plagued by war and modernity. Kaosmos's subtitle is "The Ritual of the Door", a door which remains closed to those who wait a lifetime to enter it. We therefore expect a performance about divisions, about insurmountable walls. But there are no divisions, distinctions, points of orientation. There is no inside and outside, no "us" and "them", no "these" and "those". There is the door which is mobile, and the actors move it around from place to place, laying it flat on the ground like a box or a coffin, dragging it on their shoulders like a cross or standing it upright on its frame, dividing nothing from nothing

The castle of Holstebro by Odin teatret( Visual )

9 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sequence in Hamlet which begins with the dialogue of the gravediggers and concludes with the outburst of the Prince against Laertes has two more protagonists: Yorick and Ophelia, the skull of the jester and the maid from whose flesh violets will grow. Two invisible characters: the others speak about them and show their lifeless remains on the stage. But the weeping of the nobles and the disenchanted song of the buffoons will be extinguished and the fury of history will roll away, leaving deserted and silent that moorland by the North sea which human beings have turned into a cemetery. Then Yorick and Ophelia will celebrate their wedding in the moonlight: serene and incestuous wedding of the Mother with the Child, of the Father with the Daughter, of the Old Man with the Virgin. Does Death, a grotesque Don Juan, seduce the girl, as in a Holbein etching? Or does the woman feed the child Death at her breast, nurturing it through the wheel of rebirth. Is this, then, what The Castle Of Holstebro, a joyful performance, is about? In English

L'énergie qui danse : un dictionnaire d'anthropologie théâtrale by Eugenio Barba( Book )

11 editions published between 1995 and 2008 in French and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The dead brother by Julia Varley( Visual )

3 editions published between 1993 and 2004 in English and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Dead Brother is the performance about how performances are made at Odin Teatret. The Dead Brother describes the stages of the work, which starting from a poetic text become a "poem in space": the performance. It presents the different stages of the process in which text, actor and director interact. It shows the first steps of how the actor creates her own stage presence to the last step in which the text, through the form and precision of the actions, acquires rhythms and density of meaning. The Spectator's energies can then dance, mentally and sensorially. The unrecognized creator in theatre is the spectator. The Dead Brother is a work demonstration where the "miracle of fresh water" is explained with a succession of chemical formulae and then presented in the moment in which the elements can no longer be separated and explained, but only experienced
