Emil Nolde : artist of the elements by
Averil King(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
'The celebrated German Expressionist, Emil Nolde (1867-1956), created vivid and passionate oils and watercolours. Often incorporating vibrant colours and elements of fantasy, these paintings quickly imprint themselves on the viewer's mind. His graphic works, especially his etchings, have a delicacy and originality distinguishing them from those of his contemporaries. This introduction to his work, the first in English, sets him in his time and place for readers unfamiliar with his oeuvre. Averil King's perceptive and wide-ranging text investigates the themes that preoccupied the man and the influences that shaped his art."--Wheelers.co.nz

Jahre der Kämpfe, 1902-1914 by
Emil Nolde(
Book
)
38 editions published between 1934 and 2002 in German and Undetermined and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The first volume of the Nolde's autobiography "Das Eigene Leben" ("My Own Life"), was published in 1931. In August 1934 Nolde affirmed his support for Hitler<U+2019>s role as Führer of Germany by adding his signature to the "Call to the Artists". In the following month as a Danish citizen he became a member of the National Socialist (Nazi) Association of Northern Schleswig<U+2019> (NSAN), an organisation of ethnic Germans near the Danish border. In November 1934 the second volume of his autobiography appeared, "Jahre der Kämpfe" ("Years of Struggle"), modeled on Hitler's "Mein Kampf". In it, Nolde described himself as spearheading the fight against the purported "Jewish" dominance of the German art world, which as a loner he felt himself exposed to time and again. Emil Nolde : the artist during the Third Reich by
Emil Nolde(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This trenchant reconsideration of artist Emil Nolde's life and work deconstructs the myths that have surrounded Nolde's legacy until today. Emil Nolde created some of the most powerful works of the Expressionist movement. Despite the fact that his art was represented more prominently than anyone else's in the infamous exhibition Degenerate Art, he continued to be an ardent sympathizer of the Nazi regime and an admirer of Adolf Hitler. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to Nolde's ambiguous position during the Third Reich. In addition, the book takes a fresh look at Nolde's artistic production during the Nazi period, featuring numerous works which have not yet been published or publicly displayed. Eight illustrated essays draw on a wealth of unpublished letters and documents from the artist's estate that offer new insights into Nolde's artistic practices, his political beliefs, and his anti-Semitism, deconstructing the myths that have surrounded Nolde's legacy until today

Emil Nolde by

German-Danish painter and printmaker Emil Nolde (1865 1956) was one of the first and most important representatives of expressionism, as well as an essential precursor of modernism. First trained as a woodcarver, he later studied painting and developed the vigorous brushwork and vivid choice of colors for which he is best known and which would make him one of the great oil and watercolor painters of the twentieth century. His works, including "The Prophet" and "Portrait of a Young Woman and a Child," are exhibited in major museums around the world. Produced in close collaboration with the Nolde Foundation in Germany, "Emil Nolde" illuminates the artist's life and provides extended discussions of his key works. As they trace Nolde's path from a small village in Denmark to his evolution into a prestigious artist, noted Nolde experts Christian Ring and Hans-Joachim Throl explore Nolde's world of color as seen in his paintings of gardens, landscapes, and seas and consider his use of the fantastic and grotesque in his work. They also examine his life during the Nazi regime, when his work was condemned and removed from museums and he was forbidden to paint, and his subsequent creation of the "Unpainted Pictures," a gorgeous and diverse series of watercolors he created in seclusion between 1938 and 1945. Supplemented by rarely seen documents from Nolde's archive and complemented by fifty-five color images, "Emil Nolde "sheds new light on the artist, his life in the German-Danish borderlands, and his prolific production of outstanding works

Emil Nolde : retrospective by
Emil Nolde(
Book
)
10 editions published in 2014 in German and English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A comprehensive overview of Emil Nolde, this book traces the artist's entire career, providing new perspectives on his life and work. - Known as a master of color, Emil Nolde used many different types of media besides painting, including watercolor, drawing, and prints, to create works such as his numerous flower paintings and coastal landscapes. The book explores Nolde's expressionist painting technique and reexamines his motives as an artist by looking at how his works were received andhow this was shaped by the artist's image of himself. As well as featuring Nolde's lesser studied early and late paintings and previously unpublished works this volume also takes the latest research on Nolde's work and his relationship to National Socialism into account. The book accompanies an extensive retrospective on Nolde's work
