The American century : art & culture, 1900-1950 by Barbara Haskell( Book )

14 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 1,681 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book considers American art as a response to political, social, and economic conditions. It opens at the start of the century, when boundaries between high art and all that simmered beneath it were collapsing. In these pages, we are able to see the dramatic changes that characterized art in the first half of the century. We discover why the New York Armory Show of 1913 was such a shock to many artistic sensibilities; how Alfred Stieglitz and his circle drove photography toward modernism, a movement that would eventually include all the arts; and how the Depression (and the WPA) shaped a generation of artists, leaving a rich, public legacy in photography, painting, literature, and architecture. By the century's midpoint, the artistic output of this still young nation was astonishing."--Jacket

Georgia O'Keeffe : abstraction by Georgia O'Keeffe( Book )

13 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 964 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) has long been celebrated as a central figure in twentieth-century art, the abstract works she created throughout her career have remained overlooked by critics and the public in favor of her representational subjects. In 1915, O'Keeffe leaped into abstraction with a group of charcoal drawings that were among the most radical works of art produced in the United States at that time. In these and subsequent abstractions, O'Keeffe sought to transcribe her ineffable thoughts and emotions. While her output of abstract work declined after 1930, she returned to abstraction in the mid-1940s with a new vocabulary that provided a precedent for a younger generation of abstractionists. By devoting itself to this largely unexplored area of her work, Georgia O'Keeffe: Abstraction is an overdue acknowledgment of her place as one of America's first abstract artists. In addition to rethinking O'Keefe's contribution to the development of abstract American art, this book chronicles the shifts and changes in subject matter and style over the span of her long career. It adds significant new insight into her work and life, reproducing excerpts of previously sealed letters written by O'Keeffe to photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, whom she married in 1924. These previously unpublished letters, along with other primary documents referenced by the authors, offer an intimate glimpse into her creative method and intentions as an artist

Elie Nadelman : sculptor of modern life by Barbara Haskell( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 451 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the most comprehensive publication to date on the work of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), an important sculptor and a key member of the New York art scene in the first half of the 20th century. Accompanying the first major retrospective of Nadelman's work since 1975, it brings his achievement to a new generation of art enthusiasts. Nadelman fused classical influences with the subject matter and imagery of popular culture. Using bronze, marble, wood, and plaster, he created stylized, curvilinear emblems of modern life whose formal motifs referenced both the antique and the modern. Here, Barbara Haskell presents a fully researched and broad-based examination of Nadelman's art by juxtaposing his elegant drawings with related sculptures, filling a gap in the literature on 20th-century American sculpture. - Publisher
Robert Indiana : beyond Love by Robert Indiana( Book )

9 editions published in 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 435 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With essays by René Paul Barilleaux and Sasha Nicholas Robert Indiana's popular LOVE works have made the esteemed Pop artist a household name. Their fame and ubiquity have also served to eclipse the rest of his dynamic, conceptually charged work. 'Robert Indiana: Beyond LOVE' is a compelling reassessment of the artist's contributions to American art during his long and prolific career. Indiana has explored the power of language, American identity and personal history for five decades. Although visually dazzling and apparently cheerful on the surface, his imagery has a depth and a darkness that draws on his own biography as well as on the myths, history and literature of the United States. Exhibition: Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC, USA (26.09.2013-05.01.2014) & McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, USA (Spring 2014)
Grant Wood : American Gothic and other fables by Barbara Haskell( Book )

5 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 417 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The social and political climate in which Wood's art flourished bears certain striking similarities to America today, as national identity and the tension between urban and rural areas reemerge as polarizing issues in a country facing the consequences of globalization and the technological revolution. Wood portrayed the tension and alienation of contemporary experience. By fusing meticulously observed reality with fables of childhood, he crafted unsettling images of estrangement and apprehension that pictorially manifest the anxiety of modern life

Stuart Davis : in full swing by Stuart Davis( Book )

8 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Hailed as a precursor of both pop art and contemporary abstraction, Stuart Davis captured the energy of mass culture and modern life. Beginning in 1921, a series of breakthroughs led him to develop a more abstract approach. Fusing American urban experience with European modernism, his style evolved over the next four decades to become a dominant force in postwar art. The book features some 100 works, from his 1921 paintings of tobacco packages to his abstract Egg Beater series of the late twenties, the ambitious WPA murals of the thirties, and the bold works of his last two decades, in which jagged shapes and bright colors tangle with vigorous calligraphy. The volume pays special attention to his transformative recycling of earlier works; and a chronology-drawing on previously unpublished sources-represents the most complete biography to date, painting a vivid picture of economic hardship, political activism, personal struggle, and eventual triumph"--
