Denishawn : the contributions of American dance pioneers Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn( Visual )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This documentary tells the story of one of the least-publicized, yet most influential modern dance companies in America. Founded by Ruth St. Denis and her husband Ted Shawn at the turn of the century, Denishawn became legendary for its unique approach to contemporary dance. St. Denis found fame by incorporating elements of Far and Middle Eastern dances to create abstract pieces called "musical visualizations." With the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, the couple influenced the formation of true modern dance--Martha Graham was a pupil--while both preserving and disseminating their original choreography and concepts. In 'interview' segments actors portray the couple, while rare film footage of the real St. Denis and Shawn shows them at the peak of their creative talents

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 114 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Denishawn, the revolutionary dance company founded by Ruth St. Denis and her husband Ted Shawn, spent the years between 1919 and 1931 touring extensively and creating some 300 pieces. By combining traditional ballet training with Isadora Duncan's free movement and adding elements of Far and Middle Eastern dances, along with popular symphonic music, St. Denis, Shawn, and the Denishawn company were the creators of the choreography from which American Modern dance evolved. Sadly, little of the rich body of work could be visually preserved at the time. This documentary presents the largest collection of re-created Denishawn dances to date, thus preserving these seminal works of the Mother and Father of American Modern Dance from oblivion. A brief introduction is given for each dance

"Presents the story of the first all-male dance company in the United States, known as Ted Shawn's Men Dancers. Includes historic footage of the company performing in the 1930s, capturing the beauty and rigor of Shawn's choreography. Additionally, tells the story of the founding of Jacob's Pillow, an abandoned farm that Shawn purchased to house his new dance company. The Pillow is now one of the premier annual dance festivals and summer dance schools in the country. This film highlights interviews with eight of the original Shawn dancers at a 50-year reunion at The Pillow in 1982, as well as rare archival dance films and contemporary footage of these historic dances revived at the festival. American male dancing has come a long way since the days of Ted Shawn, often called the father of modern dance. This film captures the early struggle -- the evolution and legacy of a concept that is still evolving today. Without Shawn, the American male dancer would not have achieved his fullest sense of maturity and independence. This award-winning film was directed by Ron Honsa and has aired on PBS."--Container

Ruth St. Denis: The Dancing Prophet( Visual )

3 editions published between 1999 and 2010 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This classic documentary profiles the great and controversial American dancer, Ruth St. Denis. A pioneer of modern dance, she was a vibrant and outspoken revolutionary for dance and the cause of women. Her techniques were magical and reflected her love of culture worldwide. Despite national and international recognition for her artistry, she died penniless. Throughout her life she believed that dance is a life experience, and this program befits her contribution to that philosophy. In her unpublished book, The Divine Dance, she wrote: 'the Divine Dance of the future should be able to convey with its slightest gestures some significance of the universe.... As we rise higher in the understanding of ourselves, the national and racial dissonances will be forgotten in the universal rhythms of Truth and Love. We shall sense our unity with all peoples who are moving to that exalted rhythm.'
