Numerical methods for a porous medium equation by
Michael Edward Rose(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The degenerate parabolic equation has been used to model the flow of gas through a porous medium. Error estimates for continuous and discrete time finite element procedures to approximate the solution of this equation are proved and a new regularity result is described

Evaluating computer program performance on the CRAY1 by
Larry Rudsinski(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Advanced Scientific Computers Project of Argonne's Applied Mathematics Division has two objectives: to evaluate supercomputers and to determine their effect on Argonne's computing workload. Initial efforts have focused on the CRAY1, which is the only advanced computer currently available. Users from seven Argonne divisions executed test programs on the CRAY and made performance comparisons with the IBM 370/195 at Argonne. This report describes these experiences and discusses various techniques for improving run times on the CRAY

Ergodic theorems for nonlinear contraction semigroups in a Hilbert space by
H. G Kaper(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Two ergodic theorems are presented for means of nonlinear contraction semigroups in a Hilbert space. These means are generated by a class of averaging kernels which includes the usual Abel and Cesaro(C, cap alpha) kernels

The rootcubing and the general rootpowering methods for finding the zeros of polynomials by
Erwin H Bareiss(
)
2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The rootsquaring and rootcubing method is generalized and called the general rootpowering method. A simple representation, suitable for coding, is obtained by introducing partitioned polynomials. The method is extended to include analytic functions

A proposed solution to the "Match" problem by
Vera Pless(
)
2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In a bubblechamber experiment, three cameras photograph the physical event simultaneously. These photographs consist of bubblechamber tracks, which are sequences of bubbles, and there are approximately 20 tracks to a picture. The match problem in the analysis of the events is to identify the same track in the three views. The matching, even by a person, can be quite tricky; e.g., lines can cross in one view and not in another. People have many patternrecognition processes, measuring abilities, and flexibility to choose certain parameters only in certain cases. Computers do not have the flexibility people do, and when many parameters are given, the logic can get very involved and the program extremely timeconsuming. The solution we present here to the match problem for use on computers uses only a few parameters and has only a few exceptional cases

Improving the accuracy of computed matrix eigenvalues by
J. J Dongarra(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The technique used is similar to iterative refinement for the solution of a linear system; that is, through the factorization from the lowprecision computation, an iterative algorithm is applied to increase the accuracy of the eigenpair. Extended precision arithmetic is used at critical points in the algorithm. The iterative algorithm requires O(n²) operations for each iteration
