Soviet workers and late Stalinism : labour and the restoration of the Stalinist system after World War II by Donald A Filtzer( )

25 editions published between 2002 and 2007 in English and held by 1,993 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Soviet Workers and Late Stalinism is the first study of labour and labour policy during the critical period of the Soviet Union's postwar recovery and the last years of Stalin. It is also the first detailed social history of the Soviet Union in these years available to non-Russian readers. Using previously inaccessible archival sources, Donald Filtzer describes for the first time the tragic hardships faced by workers and their families right after the war; conditions in housing and health care; the special problems of young workers; working conditions within industry; and the tremendous strains which regime policy placed not just on the mass of the population, but on the cohesion and commitment of key institutions within the Stalinist political system, most notably the trade unions and the procuracy. Filtzer's book will interest all historians of the Soviet Union and of socialism."--BOOK JACKET
Hunger and war : food provisioning in the Soviet Union during World War II by Wendy Z Goldman( )

11 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 979 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Making use of recently released Soviet archival materials, Hunger and War investigates state food supply policy and its impact on Soviet society during World War II. It explores the role of the state in provisioning the urban population, particularly workers, with food, and in feeding the Red army; the medicalization of hunger; hunger in blockaded Leningrad; and civilian mortality from hunger and malnutrition in other home front industrial regions. New research reported here challenges and complicates many of the narratives and counter-narratives about the war. The authors engage such difficult subjects as starvation mortality, bitterness over privation and inequalities in provisioning, and conflicts among state organizations. At the same time, they recognize the considerable role played by the Soviet state in organizing supplies of food to adequately support the military effort and defense production, and in developing policies that promoted social stability amid upheaval. The book makes a significant contribution to scholarship on the Soviet population's experience of World War II as well as to studies of war and famine"--Provided by publisher

« (...) ce livre, où chacun puisera en fonction de ses centres d'intérêts, mérite l'appréciation la plus élogieuse : il restera comme un ouvrage de référence, dû aux meilleurs spécialistes du domaine. Écrit par des chercheurs de cinq pays, il fait le point sur l'état de notre connaissance du monde du travail russe et soviétique. C'est donc un guide précieux qui offre une très riche information. » (Jean-Paul Depretto, Cahiers du Monde Russe) «'A Dream Deferred' is a very good introduction to recent Russian and Soviet labour historiography. (...) The volume presents an excellent sample of recent social and labour historiography in a form accessible to students and interested non-specialists as well as to scholars.» (Michael C. Hickey, Revolutionary Russia)

16 editions published between 1992 and 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In his conclusions, Filtzer shows how the labour problems under Khrushchev were the same as those which confronted Mikhail Gorbachev and his ill-fated perestroika. He argues that reform of the Soviet system is impossible within existing property relations. Current moves towards the market will bring with them new forms of instability which only the creation of a democratic, decentralized, but non-market socialism can overcome. This book is a sequel to Filtzer's well-received earlier study Soviet workers and Stalinist industrialization: the formation of modern Soviet production relations, 1928-1941. In addition to students and specialists of Soviet history and economics, it will be relevant to readers with a more general interest in labour-process analysis
The hazards of urban life in late Stalinist Russia : health, hygiene, and living standards, 1943-1953 by Donald Filtzer( Book )

16 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first detailed study of the standard of living of ordinary Russians following World War II. It examines urban living conditions under the Stalinist regime with a focus on the key issues of sanitation, access to safe water supplies, personal hygiene and anti-epidemic controls, diet and nutrition, and infant mortality. Comparing five key industrial regions, it shows that living conditions still lagged some fifty years behind Western European norms. Yet, despite this, the book reveals that the years preceding Stalin's death saw dramatic improvements in mortality rates thanks to the application of rigorous public health controls and Western medical innovations. While tracing these changes, the book also analyzes the impact that the absence of an adequate urban infrastructure had on peoples' daily lives and on the relationship between the Stalinist regime and the Russian people and, finally, how the Soviet experience compared to that of earlier industrializing societies"--Provided by publisher
The Khrushchev era : de-Stalinisation and the limits of reform in the USSR, 1953-1964 by Donald Filtzer( Book )

14 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Khrushchev Era examines the major political, social, and economic reforms of Nikita Khrushchev, from the 'Secret Speech' and Khrushchev's limited, but at the time earth-shattering critique of Stalin, to his ill-fated reorganizations of the Communist Party, agriculture, and industry. Besides giving a factual account of the reforms themselves, Filtzer analyses the complex factors behind their failure, focussing not so much on the inadequacies of Khrushchev as a leader, as on the structural obstacles to reform within the Stalinist system itself. As such the Khruschev period is shown to contain instructive historical lessons for our understanding of Mikhail Gorbachev and his own failed perestroika
