Confinement and ethnicity : an overview of World War II Japanese American relocation sites by Jeffery F Burton( )

12 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in English and held by 1,489 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report provides an overview of the tangible remains currently left at the sites of the Japanese American internment during World War II. The main focus is on the War Relocation Authority's relocation centers, but Department of Justice and U.S. Army facilities where Japanese Americans were interned are also considered. The goal of the study has been to provide information for the National Landmark Theme Study called for in the Manzanar National Historic Site enabling legislation. Archival research, field visits, and interviews with former internees provide preliminary documentation about the architectural remnants, the archeological features, and the artifacts remaining at the sites. The degree of preservation varies tremendously. At some locations, modern development has obscured many traces of the World War II-era buildings and features. At a few sites, relocation center buildings still stand, and some are still in use. Overall the physical remains at all the sites are evocative of this very significant, if shameful, episode in U.S. history, and all appear to merit National Register of Historic Places or National Historic Landmark status

Eleanor Roosevelt's book of common sense etiquette by Eleanor Roosevelt( Book )

5 editions published between 1962 and 2016 in English and held by 743 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The basis of all good human behavior is kindness," says Eleanor Roosevelt in this classic handbook, first published in 1962 as a "modern book of etiquette for modern Americans." As a politician, diplomat, and activist, as well as the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Roosevelt knew that thoughtful, civil behavior was essential to peaceful, productive relationships. In this etiquette guide, she teaches that decorum is not about strict adherence to formal rules; it is about approaching all social situations with consideration for others. She advises, "If ever you find yourself in a situation in which following a formal rule would be manifestly unkind, forget it, and be kind instead." Drawing from her personal and professional experiences, Roosevelt covers a broad range of topics, including business dealings and family affairs, writing letters and receiving guests, and entertaining at home and traveling abroad. Beginning with the necessity of good manners between husband and wife, she considers the importance of courtesy in society at large and the role all Americans play as ambassadors of democracy while visiting foreign countries. In an era of incivility, Eleanor Roosevelt's Book of Common Sense Etiquette is more relevant than ever

The moral basis of democracy by Eleanor Roosevelt( Book )

19 editions published between 1940 and 2016 in English and held by 356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A wartime manifesto on the moral obligations of democratic citizens from the most influential first lady in American history. With the threat of the Third Reich looming, Eleanor Roosevelt employs the history of human rights to establish the idea that at the core of democracy is a spiritual responsibility to other citizens. Roosevelt then calls on all Americans, especially the youth, to prioritize the well-being of others and have faith that their fellow citizens will protect them in return. She defines this trust between people as a trait of true democracy. Roosevelt advances an optimistic model for the democracy of the future, and although we've taken some steps in the direction of her vision, it's still a long way from reality. The issues first addressed in this 1940 essay-namely financial inequality and racial discrimination-are sadly still relevant today, as bigotry continues to undermine our national unity. Her first publication as first lady, The Moral Basis of Democracy is an honest and heartfelt call for all Americans to choose love and faith over hatred and fear. Roosevelt takes an inspiring stance in defense of democracy, progress, and morality; the wisdom imparted here is timeless, and a must-read for every American. This edition features a foreword by Rev. Carol Howard Merritt, an introduction by Roosevelt historian Allida Black, PhD, and an illustrated biography of Eleanor Roosevelt including images from the author's estate
It seems to me : selected letters of Eleanor Roosevelt by Eleanor Roosevelt( Book )

10 editions published between 1954 and 2005 in English and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book demonstrates Roosevelt's significance as a stateswoman and professional politician, particularly after her husband's death in 1945. These letters reveal a dimension of her personality often lost in collections of letters to family members and friends--that of a shrewd, self-confident woman unafraid to speak her mind. In her letters, Eleanor Roosevelt lectured Truman, badgered Eisenhower, and critiqued Kennedy. She disagreed with the Catholic Church over aid to parochial school ..."

This troubled world by Eleanor Roosevelt( Book )

7 editions published between 1938 and 2016 in English and held by 307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Eleanor Roosevelt's stirring call for peace in the face of rising fascism. We will have to want peace, want it enough to pay for it, pay for it in our own behavior and in material ways. In 1938, with fascist regimes gaining strength and global tensions on the rise, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt published a visionary plan for achieving world peace. This Troubled World offers a clear-eyed assessment of the political climate in the aftermath of World War I and a set of pragmatic proposals for avoiding global violence. Anticipating the United Nations by nearly a decade, Roosevelt calls for a new world court to replace the failed League of Nations. She speaks of the need to define aggressor nations and to establish a system of trade embargoes to punish wrongdoing. She also advocates for an international peacekeeping force to intervene where economic weapons are insufficient. Along with these proposals-which were in direct opposition to the policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration-Mrs. Roosevelt concludes that world peace cannot be achieved with political machinery alone; it requires a popular commitment to tolerance and brotherly love.
