"Let Truth Be The Prejudice documents the life and work of W. Eugene Smith, a man whose work expanded the range and depth of photography, bringing new aesthetic and moral power to the photo essay. Smith was born in 1918 in Wichita, Kansas, and raised according to traditional American values, believing in the nobility of America and the injustice of war. He began taking pictures with his mother's camera while still a boy and continued this practice throughout his schooling. In 1937 his burning ambition took him to New York City, where his rise as a professional photographer was meteoric."--Amazon
Faces : a narrative history of the portrait in photography by Ben Maddow( Book )

8 editions published in 1977 in English and German and held by 809 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

...The subjects in this book are extraordinarily rich, ranging from 19th century Scottish fiswives, Victorian novelists, and New Orleans prostitutes to Gertrude Stein, Garbo, Auden and San Franciso hippies. The result is a work that is as much about people as about photography, and as readable as a good novel. It is a milestone in the appreciation of photography as an art, a craft, a trade, a tool, a weapon, a magic mirror, and an act of defiance against time and death

A Sunday between wars : the course of American life from 1865 to 1917 by Ben Maddow( Book )

9 editions published between 1978 and 1979 in English and Undetermined and held by 710 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The half century between the end of the Civil War and the Declaration of War in 1917 was quiet only in the general misconception. From the ordinary nineteenth-century American's point of view, it was extraordinarily bloody. There were military expeditions against Indian tribes and against Cuba and the Philippines. There was the general strike of 1877, the cruel failure of the unions, and the ides of immigration and their furious personal energy. There was the repeated quest for the Grail of materialism--gold and silver hidden in rock. This book examines, over all, and with some awe, the building of the great pyramid of American industrialization and measures its even more immense--and almost forgotten--human cost. Because it is written from the vantage point of those below, of those new to America and still poor, much of the text is taken from diaries, letters, and contemporary accounts by authors who will forever be unknown

The asphalt jungle : a screenplay by Ben Maddow( Book )

7 editions published between 1977 and 1980 in English and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dore Schary, then head of production at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, bought The Asphalt Jungle while it was still in manuscript in an effort to match the success Warner Brothers had enjoyed with Burnett's Little Caesar and High Sierra. The choice of Ben Maddow and John Huston as screenwriters assured the artistic success of the screenplay, for few writer/directors could have matched Huston's ability to develop these characters cinematically. It was a case of strength building upon strength. Burnett's fully developed characters were transformed by Maddow and Huston into a screenplay of impressive immediacy. Indeed the portrayal of the criminals in splendid performances from Louis Calhern, Sam Jaffe, Sterling Hayden, James Whitmore, and Jean Hagen, led Bosley Crowther to lament, "If only it all weren't so corrupt!" But the characters of Burnett, Maddow and Huston, don't permit us to romanticize about them or their activities. We share their professional pride in a robbery well planned and are silent accomplices to their mutual treachery. The Asphalt Jungle was nominated for best screenplay by the Motion Picture Academy and for best-written American drama by the Writers Guild. John Huston received a nomination for best director by the Academy. As a novel, The Asphalt Jungle has been translated into twelve languages
