Poetry of the universe : a mathematical exploration of the cosmos by Robert Osserman( Book )

36 editions published between 1995 and 2011 in English and held by 1,147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A history of developments in mathematics from the geometry of the ancient Greeks to the twentieth-century concept of fractional dimensions, focusing on how these ideas have influenced theories in physics and expanded our understanding of the structure of the universe
Two-dimensional calculus by Robert Osserman( Book )

24 editions published between 1968 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 445 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Two-dimensional calculus is vital to the mastery of the broader field, and this text presents an extensive treatment of this crucial subject. The book's advantages include the thorough integration of linear algebra and materials that aid the development of readers' geometric intuition. Problem sets appear at the end of each chapter, many of them with answers. 1986 edition"--

"This clear and comprehensive study features 12 sections that discuss parametric and non-parametric surfaces, surfaces that minimize area, isothermal parameters, Bernstein's theorem, minimal surfaces with boundary, and many other topics. This revised edition includes material on minimal surfaces in relativity and topology and updated work on Plateau's problem and isoperimetric inequalities. 2002 edition"--
Geometry V : minimal surfaces by Robert Osserman( Book )

12 editions published between 1996 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 288 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book is an overview of the research on minimal surfaces of the last few years written by several renowned researchers. The methods used are taken from differential geometry, complex analysis, calculus of variations and the theory of partial differential equations. Readers will be graduate students and researchers in mathematics
The geometry of the generalized Gauss map by David A Hoffman( Book )

9 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 256 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper is devoted primarily to the study of properties of the Grassmannian of oriented 2-planes in [double-struck capital]ℝ[superscript]n and to applications of these properties to understanding minimal surfaces in [double-struck capital]ℝ[superscript]n via the generalized Gauss map. The extrinsic geometry of the Grassmannian, when considered as a submanifold of [double-struck capital]ℂP[superscript]n-², is investigated, with special emphasis on the nature of the intersection of the Grassmannian with linear subspaces of [double-struck capital]ℂP[superscript]n-¹. These results are the basis for a discussion of minimal surfaces that are degenerate in various ways; understanding the different types of degeneracy and their interrelations is a critical step toward obtaining a clear picture of the basic geometric properties of minimal surfaces in [double-struck capital]ℝ[superscript]n
Fermat's last theorem : the theorem and its proof, an exploration of issues and ideas by Kenneth Ribet( Visual )

6 editions published between 1993 and 2012 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The videotape is based on a presentation at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater in San Francisco that took place on July 28, 1993, exactly five weeks after Andrew Wiles announced that he had a proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. The videotape also includes excerpts from an interview with Andrew Wiles made in Oxford, England, the day after he announced his proof in Cambridge. Both the booklet and the videotape are designed for a general audience. They deal not only with Fermat's Last Theorem itself, but with the excitement of mathematical discovery in general and the way mathematical ideas can illuminate other subjects
Geometrie des Universums : von der Göttlichen Komödie zu Riemann und Einstein by Robert Osserman( Book )

Les mathématiques de l'univers : Ératosthène, Einstein, Dante, Feynman et les autres by Robert Osserman( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in French and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Funny numbers : an evening with Steve Martin in conversation with Bob Osserman by American Mathematical Society( Visual )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Author and actor Steve Martin chatted with mathematician Robert Osserman of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in Berkeley on December 15, 2002 at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre. They discussed literature and mathematics, why two banjos are like one slide rule, and whether we really know what pi is. Steve Martin read and enacted excerpts from his works, reminisced about his work for the Smothers Brothers, and discussed the authors who influenced him. The hilarity of this event as it spins out of control has to be seen (on this videotape) to be believed!"--Container
