H Bart(
)
10 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 784 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is dedicated to Israel Gohberg on occasion of his 80th birthday on August 23, 2008. It is an expression of esteem and friendship for a great mathematician, a remarkable person and an inspiring colleague. The book contains reflections by Gohberg himself on his own mathematical activities and those of others. It also includes contributions of colleagues and coworkers, both from his time in the Soviet Union and from when he lived and worked in the West. The contributions in question are not mathematical research papers but focus on the man Israel Gohberg and are intended for a wide audience. To be found are letters, speeches, laudatios and reminiscences which, together, present an attractive picture of the way in which Israel Gohberg in the past four to five decades influenced the lives of many mathematicians. Biographical material such as a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a list of Ph. D. students and information about honorary doctoral degrees is also included

Basic operator theory by

Book
)
27 editions published between 1980 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 715 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Rii application of linear operators on a Hilbert space. We begin with a chapter on the geometry of Hilbert space and then proceed to the spectral theory of compact self adjoint operators; operational calculus is next presented as a nat ural outgrowth of the spectral theory. The second part of the text concentrates on Banach spaces and linear operators acting on these spaces. It includes, for example, the three 'basic principles of linear analysis and the Riesz Fredholm theory of compact operators. Both parts contain plenty of applications. All chapters deal exclusively with linear problems, except for the last chapter which is an introduction to the theory of nonlinear operators. In addition to the standard topics in functional anal ysis, we have presented relatively recent results which appear, for example, in Chapter VII. In general, in writ ing this book, the authors were strongly influenced by re cent developments in operator theory which affected the choice of topics, proofs and exercises. One of the main features of this book is the large number of new exercises chosen to expand the reader's com prehension of the material, and to train him or her in the use of it. In the beginning portion of the book we offer a large selection of computational exercises; later, the proportion of exercises dealing with theoretical questions increases. We have, however, omitted exercises after Chap ters V, VII and XII due to the specialized nature of the subject matter

Matrix polynomials by
I Gohberg(
Book
)
35 editions published between 1982 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 631 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the theory of polynomials in a complex variable with matrix coefficients. Basic matrix theory can be viewed as the study of the special case of polynomials of first degree; the theory developed in Matrix Polynomials is a natural extension of this case to polynomials of higher degree. It has applications in many areas, such as differential equations, systems theory, the WienerHopf technique, mechanics and vibrations, and numerical analysis. Although there have been significant advances in some quarters, this work remains the only systematic development of the theory of matrix polynomials. Audience: students, instructors, and researchers in linear algebra, operator theory, differential equations, systems theory, and numerical analysis. Its contents are accessible to readers who have had undergraduatelevel courses in linear algebra and complex analysis

18 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and German and held by 562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The state space method developed in the last decades allows us to study the theory of linear systems by using tools from the theory of linear operators; conversely, it had a strong influence on operator theory introducing new questions and topics." "The present volume contains a collection of essays representing some of the recent advances in the state space method. Methods covered include noncommutative systems theory, new aspects of the theory of discrete systems, discrete analogs of canonical systems, and new applications to the theory of Bezoutiants and convolution equations." "The articles in the volume will be of interest to pure and applied mathematicians, electrical engineers and theoretical physicists."Jacket

Holomorphic operator functions of one variable and applications : methods from complex analysis in several variables by
I Gohberg(
)
19 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is a book on holomorphic operator functions of a single variable and applications, which is focused on the relations between local and global theories. It is based on methods and technics of complex analysis of several variables. The first part of the theory starts with a straightforward generalization of some results from the basics of analysis of scalar functions of one complex variable. In the second part, which is the main part of the theory, results are obtained by methods and tools adapted from complex analysis of functions of several variables. We have in mind the theory of holomorphic cocycles (fiber bundles) with values in infinitedimensional noncommutative groups. As a rule, these results do not appear in traditional complex analysis of one variable, not even for matrix valued cocycles. The third part consists of applications to operator theory. Here applications are presented for holomorphic families of subspaces and PlemeljMuschelishvili factorization. The fourth part presents a generalization of the theory of cocycles to cocycles with restrictions. This part contains also applications to interpolation problems, to the problem of holomorphic equivalence and diagonalization

Interpolation, Schur functions, and moment problems by
Daniel Alpay(
)
10 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 494 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Schur analysis originates with a 1917 paper by Schur where he associated to a function analytic and contractive in the open unit disk a sequence, finite or infinite, of numbers in the open unit disk, called Schur coefficients. In signal processing, they are often called reflection coefficients. Under the word Schur analysis one encounters a variety of problems related to Schur functions such as interpolation problems, moment problems, study of the relationships between the Schur coefficients and the properties of the function, study of underlying operators and others. This volume is almost entirely dedicated to the analysis of Schur and Carathéodory functions and to the solutions of problems for these classes

Results and problems in combinatorial geometry by
V. G Bolti︠a︡nskiĭ(
Book
)
22 editions published between 1965 and 1986 in English and Russian and held by 465 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this short book, the authors discuss three types of problems from combinatorial geometry: Borsuk's partition problem, covering convex bodies by smaller homothetic bodies, and the illumination problem. They show how closely related these problems are to each other. The presentation is elementary, with no more than highschool mathematics and an interest in geometry required to follow the arguments. Most of the discussion is restricted to two and threedimensional Euclidean space, though sometimes more general results and problems are given. Thus even the mathematically unsophisticated reader can grasp some of the results of a branch of twentiethcentury mathematics that has applications in such disciplines as mathematical programming, operations research and theoretical computer science. At the end of the book the authors have collected together a set of unsolved and partially solved problems that a sixthform student should be able to understand and even attempt to solve

Traces and determinants of linear operators by

15 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The authors initially planned to write an article describing the origins and developments of the theory of Fredholm operators and to present their recollections of this topic. We started to read again classical papers and we were sidetracked by the literature concerned with the theory and applications of traces and determinants of infinite matrices and integral operators. We were especially impressed by the papers of Poincare, von Koch, Fredholm, Hilbert and Carleman, as well as F. Riesz's book on infinite systems of linear equations. Consequently our plans were changed and we decided to write a paper on the history of determinants of infinite matrices and operators. During the preparation of our paper we realized that many mathematical questions had to be answered in order to gain a more complete understanding of the subject. So, we changed our plans again and decided to present the subject in a more advanced form which would satisfy our new requirements. This whole process took between four and five years of challenging, but enjoyable work. This entailed the study of the appropriate relatively recent results of Grothendieck, Ruston, Pietsch, Hermann Konig and others. After the papers [GGK1] and [GGK2] were published, we saw that the written material could serve as the basis of a book."The authors

Factorization of matrix functions and singular integral operators by

15 editions published between 1198 and 2013 in English and German and held by 330 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A few years aga the authors started a project of a book on the theory of systems of onedimensional singular integral equaƯ tions which was planned as a continuation of the monograph by one of the authors and N. Ya. Krupnik ̃̃ concerning scalar equaƯ tions. This set of notes was initiated as a chapter dealing with problems of factorization of matrix functions visavis appliƯ cations to systems of singular integral equations. Working systematically onthischapter and adding along the way new points of view, new proofs and results, we finally saw that the material connected with factorizations is of independent interest and we decided to publish this chapter as aseparate volume. In fact, because of recent activity, the amount of material was quite large and we quickly learned that we cannot cover all of the results in complete detail. We have tried to include a represenƯ tative variety of all kinds of methods, techniques, results and applications. Apart of the current work exposes results from the Russian literature which have never appeared in English translation. We have also decided to reflect some of the recent results which make interesting connections between factorization of matrix functions and systems theory. The field remains very active and many results and connecƯ tions are still not weIl understood. These notes should be viewed as a stepping stone to further development. The authors hope that sometime they will return to complete their original plan

This book presents a panorama of operator theory. It treats a variety of classes of linear operators which illustrate the richness of the theory, both in its theoretical developments and its applications. For each of the classes various differential and integral operators motivate or illustrate the main results. The topics have been updated and enhanced by new developments, many of which appear here for the first time. Interconnections appear frequently and unexpectedly. This second volume consists of five parts: triangular representations, classes of Toeplitz operators, contractive operators and characteristic operator functions, Banach algebras and algebras of operators, and extension and completion problems. The exposition is selfcontained and has been simplified and polished in an effort to make advanced topics accessible to a wide audience of students and researchers in mathematics, science and engineering. )
15 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 310 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This twovolume work presents a systematic theoretical and computational study of several types of generalizations of separable matrices. The primary focus is on fast algorithms (many of linear complexity) for matrices in semiseparable, quasiseparable, band and companion form. The work examines algorithms of multiplication, inversion and description of eigenstructure and includes a wealth of illustrative examples throughout the different chapters. The second volume, consisting of four parts, addresses the eigenvalue problem for matrices with quasiseparable structure and applications to the polynomial root finding problem. In the first part the properties of the characteristic polynomials of principal leading submatrices, the structure of eigenspaces and the basic methods for computing eigenvalues are studied in detail for matrices with quasiseparable representation of the first order. The second part is devoted to the divide and conquer method, with the main algorithms also being derived for matrices with quasiseparable representation of order one. The QR iteration method for some classes of matrices with quasiseparable representations of any order is studied in the third part. This method is then used in the last part in order to provide a fast solver for the polynomial root finding problem. The work is based mostly on results obtained by the authors and their coauthors. Due to its many significant applications and accessible style, the text will be a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, numerical analysts, computer scientists and mathematicians alike
