„In München ist er seit Jahrzehnten so etwas wie ein Lokalmatador und heute über alle Grenzen hinweg berühmt: der Bariton Christian Gerhaher... Jetzt hat Christian Gerhaher „Die schöne Magelone“ von Johannes Brahms eingesungen, unterstützt von seinem Liedbegleiter Gerold Huber – und keinem Geringeren als Martin Walser. Die „Magelone“, das ist die Nacherzählung eines altfranzösischen Ritterromans von Ludwig Tieck. In die Geschichte von der schönen Magelone und dem Grafen Peter, der ihr Herz im Sturm erobert, finden sich 18 Gedichte eingestreut, von denen Brahms 15 vertont hat. Was tun mit den epischen Textlängen zwischen den Gedichten, das fragt sich jeder, der diesen Zyklus aufführt. Einfach weglassen? Dann bleibt der Inhalt kryptisch. Am besten: kürzen und neu dichten. Das hat Martin Walser getan, und es ist ihm ganz wunderbar gelungen, durch Tiecks romantische Sprache den alemannischen Tonfall der Vorlage durchschimmern zu lassen. Dadurch dass Gerhaher sich mehr aufs Rapportierende verlegt, geht dem Zyklus einiges an Spannung verloren: die Spannung zwischen dem Erlebten und dem Erzählten, zwischen Sitte und Eros, die Spannung aber auch zwischen Okzident und Orient. Vielleicht sieht Christian Gerhaher diese Bezüge nicht, vielleicht traut er ihnen nicht, vielleicht traut er Tieck und Brahms auch nicht. Die Distanz jedenfalls, die man hier hört und spürt, ist schade. Denn die Musik gehört zum Schönsten, was Brahms an Liedern je geschrieben hat“ (swr.de)
