The masters and the slaves : (Casa-grande & senzala) A study in the development of Brazilian civilization by
Gilberto Freyre(
Book
)
81 editions published between 1946 and 1986 in English and held by 2,574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The English translation of this standard work of an anthrologist on Brazilian society deviates in title from the exact translation, - "Big House and Slave Quarters". In its original, this has gone through four revisions. As a reference tool for students of race and culture, it is an important contribution, but solely, one would think, in that field. Even today there are inescapable traces of the 16th century feudalism, rooted in a slave culture, the outgrowth of harmonious union of culture with culture, - the native, the Portuguese colonist with his mixed antecedents, the Negro. In minute detail, Freyre surveys the contribution made by each, - physical, social, economic. His data is based on study of primary sources; the result, an essay in genetic sociology and social history, as evidenced in significant aspects of the formation of the Brazilian family unit. -- From https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/gilberto-freyre/the-masters-and-the-slaves/ (Oct. 31, 2017)

Mother and son : a Brazilian tale by
Gilberto Freyre(
Book
)
9 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 548 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The venue [of this volume]--always the same for Freyre--is Recife [a city in Brazil], and the scant tale is deeply set in the befores and afters of 1888-1889 when Brazil went through the eruption of emancipation and the overthrow of monarchy for republic. A note arrives at Freyre's door summoning him to the home of a wellborn widow who is not only an unknown distant relative but the exact prototype of the widow who is to figure in the novel that the author is about to write. Mirabile dictu, the parallels go on, and amazed the author releases himself from his novelist's vows and again becomes the sociological biographer ... This book--it hardly is a novel--isn't for everyone, but in its own private way it reveals much of fin de siecle Brazil when the sugar plantation owners reigned in Pernambuco and experience was the prerogative of the wealthy bucks and the impoverished blacks. --Kirkus Reviews, 4/17/1967
