I denne boken har forfatteren gjort et utvalg av 250 kunstgjenstander fra Grønland. Gjenstandene strekker fra omkring 900 til 1960-årene. Presentasjonen gir et innblikk i 1000 år av Grønlands kulturhistorie. Vi får informasjon om de forskjellige kulturer som har vært, og er på Grønland, og om deres forhold til de gjenstander vi i dag oppfatter som kunst, men som den gang først og fremst tjente til praktiske formål. Asgeir Jorn er selv billedkunstner. Jorn har jobbet sammen med den franske fotografen Gérard Franceschi om prosjektet, og bokens sort-hvite gjengivelser er reprodusert etter hans originale fotografier fra 1960-årene. Boken har en tematisk oppbygging, og er et fotografisk billedverk, med litteraturhenvisninger. Boken innledes med 50-siders tekst skrevet av Tinna Møbjerg, som er spesialist i arktisk arkeologi og Jens Rosing, som er født på Grønland, og har skrevet en rekke bøker om Grønland. Samene var opprinnelige jegere og beveget seg over store områder i det nordlige Norge, Sverige, Finland og Russland. Først på 15-1600-tallet oppsto den samiske kulturen vi kjenner i dag som bygger på reinsdyravl og mer permanente bosteder. Samtidig kom samene under større press fra andre som bodde lengre syd og drev landbruk. Denne boken viser mer en 300 gjenstander som gir et innblikk i de siste 500 årene av samenes historie. Gjennom utvalget og måten bildene er satt sammen på, gir Asger Jorn sin kunstneriske fortolkning av samspillet mellom samene, naturen og reinsdyrene. Det speiler også sammensmeltningen av gamle myter og kristendommen. Denne kombinasjonen av nordisk mytologi, kristendom og samisk religion ses på de ganske få trommene som er bevart. Sammen med fotograf Ferard Franceschi skildrer Jorn samefolkets natur og livsform fra Russland til Norge uttrykt i dagligdagse bruksting, smykker og prydgjenstander.
