The number devil : a mathematical adventure by Hans Magnus Enzensberger( Book )

32 editions published between 1997 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,802 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annoyed with his math teacher who assigns word problems and won't let him use a calculator, twelve-year-old Robert finds help from the number devil in his dreams, in this international best-seller. In twelve dreams, Robert, a boy who hates math, meets a Number Devil, who leads him to discover the amazing world of numbers: infinite numbers, prime numbers, Fibonacci numbers, numbers that magically appear in triangles, and numbers that expand without. As we dream with him, we are taken further and further into mathematical theory, where ideas eventually take flight, until everyone-from those who fumble over fractions to those who solve complex equations in their heads-winds up marveling at what numbers can do. Hans Magnus Enzensberger is a true polymath, the kind of superb intellectual who loves thinking and marshals all of his charm and wit to share his passions with the world. In The Number Devil, he brings together the surreal logic of Alice in Wonderland and the existential geometry of Flatland with the kind of math everyone would love, if only they had a number devil to teach it to them--From product description

Hammerstein, oder, Der Eigensinn : eine deutsche Geschichte by Hans Magnus Enzensberger( Book )

28 editions published between 2008 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 682 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Enzensberger's latest book is a documentary, a collage of documents, narration, fictional interviews around the lives of the German general Kurt von Hammerstein and his wife and children. A member of an old military family, a brilliant staff officer, last commander of the German army before Hitler seized power, Hammerstein was nevertheless an idiosyncratic character. Too old perhaps to be a resister - he died in 1943 - he retained an independence of mind which marks him out from most of his army colleagues."--Jacket

Kiosk : neue Gedichte by Hans Magnus Enzensberger( Book )

35 editions published between 1995 and 2000 in 4 languages and held by 664 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As well as being Germany's most important poet, Hans Magnus Enzensberger is a provocative cultural essayist and one of Europe's leading political thinkers. In Kiosk, his latest collection, he draws on his wide knowledge of the scientific and technical developments of the last half-century, yet comes out on the other side of extreme scepticism - on the side of poetry and poetry's 'negative capability', a kind of unknowing. Though never a confessional poet, he has won through to the freedom to draw on intimate experience too. However disillusioned now about public issues, he remains a poet of defiance, as intelligent, compassionate and trenchant as ever

Der kurze Sommer der Anarchie; Buenaventura Durrutis Leben und Tod. Roman by Hans Magnus Enzensberger( Book )

55 editions published between 1971 and 2016 in German and Undetermined and held by 583 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Civil wars : from L.A. to Bosnia by Hans Magnus Enzensberger( Book )

8 editions published between 1993 and 1995 in English and held by 461 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Civil Wars, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Germany's most astute literary and political critic, chronicles the global changes taking place as the result of evolving notions of nationalism, loyalty, and community. Enzensberger sees similar forces at work around the world, from America's racial uprisings in Los Angeles to the outright carnage in the former Yugoslavia. He argues that previous approaches to class or generational conflict have failed us, and that we are now confronted with an "autism of violence": a tendency toward self-destruction and collective madness.--Publisher

Aussichten auf den Bürgerkrieg by Hans Magnus Enzensberger( Book )

33 editions published between 1993 and 2007 in 4 languages and held by 419 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
