General Grant by Matthew Arnold( Book )

9 editions published between 1960 and 1995 in English and held by 673 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

General Grant by Matthew Arnold with a Rejoinder by Mark Twain presents conflicting essays and cultures. Matthew Arnold's 1886 essay on Grant praised the general and his posthumously published Memoirs, but to many Americans its tone seemed patronizing of their hero and country. Grant's friend and personal benefactor, Mark Twain, delivered a caustic rejoinder to the Army and Navy Club of Connecticut in April 1887. Thus Arnold became a pet prejudice of Twain's and may have served as an inspiration for A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur?s Court. Arnold?s essay does not appear in his collected works. And in this volume, Twain's rejoinder is published in a correct text for the first time since the Hartford Courant printed his speech

The social origins of English education by Joan Simon( Book )

11 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 395 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author's historical approach to the study of education accounts for the past in terms of the past rather than the present. Thus, formal schooling is but one type of socialization traced in this survey. The intention of the book is to suggest a new starting point opening up the whole field of education for consideration. New developments in historical scholarship have made possible the recasting of the history of education as an aspect of social and intellectual history. The first part surveys the early development of education in England in broad outline, up to the twelfth century. In the second part three main topics are taken up in more detail, drawing on recent historical monography which bear closely on education: 1) The Agricultural Year: Rural Experience and Upbringing; 2) The Urban Outlook: Civility and the Education of Children; 3) Learning and Teaching: The Legacy of the Medieval University. Footnotes and a selected annotated bibliography complete the study. (Author/DJB)
