Gutenberg and the impact of printing by Stephan Füssel( Book )

20 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and German and held by 535 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From typefounding through typesetting to the printing process itself, this narrative offers a fresh look at the unprecedented success story of the spread of the "black art" right across Europe in a mere 40 years. Stephan Fussel here analyses the earliest printings, placing them in the context of the history of communication and the intellectual climate of a Europe-wide educated elite by about 1500. He foregrounds the tremendous rise in European culture and the history of education experienced as a direct result of this media revolution." "Stephan Fussel traces the modern resonances of Gutenberg's invention, which persisted in virtually unchanged from for a further 350 years. It underwent decisive technological change through industrialisation and mechanisation in the nineteenth century, and again through digitalisation at the close of the twentieth century. However, as Fussel shows, the mass diffusion of information and the related communication revolution which began with Gutenberg continue unabated."--Jacket

23 editions published between 2008 and 2015 in English and German and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This quality reprint includes the most enchanting color plates from the Civitates orbis terrarum, a magnificent collection of town map engravings, produced between 1572 and 1617. Featuring plans, bird's-eye views, and maps for all major cities in Europe, plus important urban centers in Asia, Africa, and Latin American, this masterwork in urban mapping gives us a comprehensive view of city life at the turn of the 17th century. It was edited and annotated by theologian and publisher Georg Braun and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg, but also involved over a hundred different artists and cartographers who contributed not only town views, but additional elements, such as figures in local dress, courtroom scenes, and topographical details to help convey the situation, commercial power, and political influence of each city. Taschen's reprint contextualizes the plates with selected extracts from Braun's original texts on the history and significance of each urban center as well as detailed commentaries to place each city map in its cartographical and cultural context."--Publisher's website

Celebrated printer and type designer Giambattista Bodoni set the standard for printing the alphabet with his Manuale tipografico (1818). The two-volume set--published posthumously in a limited edition of 250--features 142 sets of roman and italic typefaces, a wide selection of borders, ornaments, symbols, and flowers, as well as Greek, Hebrew, Russian, Arabic, Phoenician, Armenian, Coptic, and Tibetan alphabets. Official printer for the Duke of Parma, Bodoni (1740-1813) declared that well-designed type derived its beauty from four principles: uniformity of design, sharpness and neatness, good taste, and charm. His typefaces display an unprecedented degree of technical refinement, and epitomize purity and grace. The culmination of more than four decades of work, the Manuale tipografico represents one of history's greatest typographical achievements. The Bodoni typeface is still widely used even today, both in digital media and in print, and TASCHEN's meticulous reprint of Bodoni's masterwork gives readers a rare opportunity to explore the origins of the Bodoni typeface and learn about its creator

The Bible in pictures : illustrations from the workshop of Lucas Cranach (1534) by Lucas Cranach( Book )

7 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Martin Luther's Bible, published in 1534, was the first complete German Bible and a pivotal event in the history of Christianity. Luther's revolutionary translation, modern in vernacular and interpretation, made the Bible accessible to laypeople, fueled anger and revulsion toward Rome and the Papacy, and begat a new religion: Protestantism. The most desirable copies came with shockingly graphic and politically-charged illustrations, such as those depicting the Whore of Babylon riding a seven-headed beast while wearing the Papal crown, or the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse led by a Turkish soldier"--Publisher website
