Chinese economic performance in the long run by
Angus Maddison(
Book
)
25 editions published between 1998 and 2007 in English and French and held by 803 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The study provides a major reassessment of the scale and scope of China's resurgence over the past half century, employing quantitative measurement techniques which are standard practice in OECD countries. It uses a comparative approach to explain why China's role in the world economy has changed so dramatically in the last thousand years. It concludes that China is likely to resume its natural role as the world's largest economy by the year 2015, thus regaining the position it had held until 1890. A dynamic link (StatLink) is provided for each table and graph, which directs the user to a web page where the corresponding data are available in Excel® format.--Publisher's description

The world economy : historical statistics by
Angus Maddison(
Book
)
17 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and French and held by 723 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Maddison offers insights into the history and political influence of national accounts and national accounting. He demonstrates that such statistical data can enlighten the contemporary and later observer in the analysis of economic phenomena such as growth, market formation and income distribution. This approach is particularly interesting for developing countries which often lack the expertise or data to produce good national accounts and are thus deprived of a vital policy-making tool

Guaranteeing development? : the impact of financial guarantees by
J. T Winpenny(
)
7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume tests the relevance and usefulness of guarantees to public and private actors in developing countries, especially for funding development projects. The presence of guarantees from multilateral or bilateral agencies can encourage financial flows either to increase, or to go where they otherwise might not. In this way, they can have a positive effect on sovereign ratings as well as their immediate direct effect on the local development environment. As a bonus, this study finds, development guarantees can help stimulate and stabilize local capital markets, thus providing future benefits for both public and private investors.--Publisher summary

The ladder of competitiveness : how to climb it by
Orsetta Causa(
)
8 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 470 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Tables of national competitiveness give an easily comparable ranking of the winners and losers of global economic competition, but they do not explain why the poor countries are four times less productive than the rich ones or why some rich countries are twice as productive as others. Using empirical data from over 50 countries, this book shows how even small differences in a number of factors combine to boost or block productivity. Governments need such information to set priorities. Investors need it too, and two new rankings are proposed as alternatives to a simple comparison of industrial productivity. The first, called the investor ranking, is based on infrastructure, human capital and total factor productivity. The second, exporter ranking, is for investors whose prime concern is for a production platform well-integrated into world trade. Combining the new rankings with a more traditional one produces three groups of countries, termed balanced, high potential, and vulnerable. Group membership reserves some surprises: you may be rich, but that does not mean you are not vulnerable.--Publisher's description

Waging the global war on poverty : strategies and case studies by
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(
Book
)
9 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 419 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Eradicating poverty has long been one of the priorities of development co-operation. Yet, despite undoubted progress towards this goal, the strategies adopted at the international and national levels remain controversial. Poverty reduction is a complex issue, involving numerous players in a host of economic, social, political and environmental policy fields. The originality of this publication lies in its approach to identifying best practice, an approach which is as open and thorough as the state of the art will allow. How realistic is it to seek to cut extreme poverty by half by the year 2015? What are the most effective strategies employed by donors, be they development agencies or developed countries? What lessons can be learned from the experience of the developing countries? Clearly, these and many other questions are still unresolved. This publication approaches them by giving a broad overview of general poverty-reduction strategies and objectives. It also presents five particularly enlightening case studies on Bolivia, Côte d’Ivoire, the State of Kerala in India, Malaysia and Uganda

The future of Asia in the world economy by
Colm Foy(
Book
)
12 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Based on scenarios produced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the OECD Development Centre, the authors consider ways in which long-term Asian growth can be consolidated to the benefit of the global economy as a whole. Looking beyond current economic difficulties, Asian countries have strong growth prospects, assuming they pay due attention to domestic institutional strengthening, investment in human capital and the conservation of environmental capital." "This volume was produced as a product of the third "International Forum on Asian Perspectives", organised annually by the ADB and the OECD Development Centre. The purpose of the Forum is to encourage interchange of ideas between Asian and European specialists on questions of economic importance to the two regions."--Jacket

Financial liberalisation in Asia : analysis and prospects by
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(
Book
)
11 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 407 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Rapid globalisation has brought substantial benefits to developing Asia, but it has also heightened the risks associated with policy mistakes, weak financial institutions, and problems in corporate and public governance. The 1997 Asian crisis has demonstrated the urgent need to rethink the sequencing and comprehensiveness of financial liberalisation. Would further opening of Asia's financial systems be helpful or counterproductive in fostering financial stability? What structural reforms do emerging economies need to undertake to ensure that capital inflows are transformed into productive investment? Which regulatory and other requirements would have to be attached to further financial liberalisation? And what role should international organisations and the private sector play in crisis resolution? This volume seeks to provide answers to these questions by discussing the roots of the Asian financial crisis and suggesting some constructive approaches to crisis resolution. It was produced jointly by the Asian Development Bank and OECD Development Centre based on their fourth joint annual Forum on Asian Perspectives
