He demonstrates that such statistical data can enlighten the contemporary and later observer in the analysis of economic phenomena such as growth, market formation and income distribution. This approach is particularly interesting for developing countries which often lack the expertise or data to produce good national accounts and are thus deprived of a vital policy-making tool
Chinese economic performance in the long run by Angus Maddison ( Book )
20 editions published between 1998 and 2007 in English and French and held by 742 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The study provides a major reassessment of the scale and scope of China's resurgence over the past half century, employing quantitative measurement techniques which are standard practice in OECD countries. It uses a comparative approach to explain why China's role in the world economy has changed so dramatically in the last thousand years. It concludes that China is likely to resume its natural role as the world's largest economy by the year 2015, thus regaining the position it had held until 1890. A dynamic link (StatLink) is provided for each table and graph, which directs the user to a web page where the corresponding data are available in Excel® format.--Publisher's description
Alternative strategies for economic development by Keith B Griffin ( Book )
16 editions published between 1988 and 1999 in English and held by 685 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Alternative strategies for economic development create great controversy and intense debate among practitioners and academics concerned with economic and social progress in the third world. The core of the book analyzes the six most widely adopted strategies of development, namely, monetarism, the open economy, industrialization, the green revolution or agriculture-led develop-ment, redistributive strategies of development and socialist strategies. The strengths and weaknesses of each strategy are assessed and then compared. Evaluation of the strategies is based on their performance as regards resource utilization and the level of income; savings, investment and growth; human capital formation; poverty and inequality; the role of the state; and participation, democracy and freedom. The book contains a blend of economic theory, statistical evidence and numerous country case studies. The focus is on government policy and the implications of alternative policy approaches for material betterment and social equity in the Third World. This new edition opens with a new introduction discussing the human development strategy, the economic transition paths followed in the ex-socialist countries and the impact of globalization on development

Guaranteeing development? the impact of financial guarantees by J. T Winpenny ( )
6 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume tests the relevance and usefulness of guarantees to public and private actors in developing countries, especially for funding development projects. The presence of guarantees from multilateral or bilateral agencies can encourage financial flows either to increase, or to go where they otherwise might not. In this way, they can have a positive effect on sovereign ratings as well as their immediate direct effect on the local development environment. As a bonus, this study finds, development guarantees can help stimulate and stabilize local capital markets, thus providing future benefits for both public and private investors.--Publisher summary
The ladder of competitiveness how to climb it by Orsetta Causa ( )
7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Tables of national competitiveness give an easily comparable ranking of the winners and losers of global economic competition, but they do not explain why the poor countries are four times less productive than the rich ones or why some rich countries are twice as productive as others. Using empirical data from over 50 countries, this book shows how even small differences in a number of factors combine to boost or block productivity. Governments need such information to set priorities. Investors need it too, and two new rankings are proposed as alternatives to a simple comparison of industrial productivity. The first, called the investor ranking, is based on infrastructure, human capital and total factor productivity. The second, exporter ranking, is for investors whose prime concern is for a production platform well-integrated into world trade. Combining the new rankings with a more traditional one produces three groups of countries, termed balanced, high potential, and vulnerable. Group membership reserves some surprises: you may be rich, but that does not mean you are not vulnerable.--Publisher's description

Based on scenarios produced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the OECD Development Centre, the authors consider ways in which long-term Asian growth can be consolidated to the benefit of the global economy as a whole. This volume was produced as a product of the third "International Forum on Asian Perspectives", organised annually by the ADB and the OECD Development Centre. The purpose of the Forum is to encourage interchange of ideas between Asian and European specialists on questions of economic importance to the two regions
