Social change in urban America by Max Birnbaum( Book )

9 editions published between 1972 and 1973 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work includes introductory material on the community with emphasis on the inner city, prefaces to each group of readings, the readings themselves, and bibliographies. The book presents readings on topics that are central to an understanding of social change in the inner city. The first section, on the city as community and as bureaucracy, provides background to the other three, on education, police, and welfare. Each segment of readings includes three types of literature: (1) a descriptive selection, using traditional concepts; (2) an article about an issue or a case study; and, (3) a conceptual article, mainly theoretical. The order chosen fits in with the conception that experience is essential to learning. Thus, the description of an issue or problem begins with widely held assumptions; then, learning requires a discussion of these issues from a novel point of view. Finally, one task of the theorist is to take the concepts that delimit an aspect of the real world and to show that another set of concepts can lay bare the skelton to reveal a familiar problem to be quite different when the rhetoric and assumptions of familiarity are removed. Comparative information about individual departments and programs in colleges and universities is presented for the biological sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering, general science, mathematical sciences, physics, and astronomy. Institutions are listed alphabetically within the seven major fields. Department information includes enrollment by sex; admission standards; degrees offered; the number of undergraduate degrees conferred (1967-1968 data); the majors offered; amount of student time spent in lectures, seminars and the laboratory; requirements for graduation; the number of graduates in recent years (1960-1966) who have gone on to earn Ph.D. degrees and national awards, and the percent of students entering graduate programs, industrial, government and educational professions immediately after graduation. The availability of opportunities for research and for use of computer facilities by undergraduates is indicated. The seven indexes categorize departments and institutions by subject areas, majors offered and by rank order of departments or institutions according to the majors going on to graduate study or medical/dental school. Approximately 2,500 departments and programs are covered in this report. (Pr)
Teaching and learning about science and social policy by Kenneth D Benne( Book )

3 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph explores aspects of science and technology in contemporary society and suggests methods for teaching about social policy issues which have resulted from scientific and technological developments. Section one offers an argument for teaching about science and social policy; surveys the sociology, politics, and history of contemporary science and technology; and identifies methodological problems in teaching about science and social policy. Included is a discussion of six general learning objectives which should be met in a study of science and social policy. The objectives include understanding the (1) role of citizen participation in policymaking, (2) extent to which scientific and technological developments can change people's lives, (3) ways in which laymen depend upon experts' knowledge, and (4) importance of translating personal values into participative action. Section two presents social studies units on nuclear energy, electronic technology, and genetic engineering. Each unit includes expository reading material, learning activities, and reading lists.
