Two-dimensional aerodynamic characteristics of several polygon-shaped cross-sectional models applicable to helicopter fuselages by Henry L Kelley ( Book )
5 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A wind-tunnel investigation was conducted to determine two-dimensional aerodynamic characteristics of nine polygon-shaped models applicable to helicopter fuselages. The models varied from 1/2 to 1/5 scale and were nominally triangular, diamond, and rectangular in shape. Side force and normal force were obtained at increments of angle of flow incidence from -45 deg to 90 deg. The data were compared with results from a baseline UH-60 tail-boom cross- sectional model. The results indicate that the overall shapes of the plots of normal force and side force were similar to the characteristic shape of the baseline data; however, there were important differences in magnitude. At a flow incidence of 0 deg, larger values of normal force for the polygon models indicate an increase in fuselage down load of 1 to 2.5 percent of main-rotor thrust compared with the baseline value. Also, potential was indicated among some of the configurations to produce high fuselage side forces and yawing moments compared with the baseline model
Aerodynamic characteristics of several current helicopter tail boom cross sections including the effect of spoilers by John Cook Wilson ( Book )
4 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Aerodynamic characteristics were determined of three cylindrical shapes representative of tail boom cross sections of the AH-64, UH-60, and UH-1H helicopters. Forces and pressures were measured in a wind-tunnel investigation. Data was obtained for a flow incidence range from -45 to 90 deg and a dynamic pressure range from 1.5 to 50 psf. These ranges provided data representative of full-scale Reynolds numbers and the full range of flow incidence to which these helicopter tail boom shapes would be subjected at low flight speeds. The effects of protuberances such as tail rotor drive-shaft covers and spoilers were evaluated. The data indicate that significant side loads on tail booms of helicopters can be generated and that the addition of spoilers can beneficially alter the side loads. Although an increase in vertical drag occurs, the net effect through reduction of tail rotor thrust required can be an improvement in helicopter performance. Experimental evaluation of a flat wake theory for predicting rotor inflow-wake velocities by John Cook Wilson ( Book )
5 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The theory for predicting helicopter inflow-wake velocities called flat wake theory was correlated with several sets of experimental data. The theory was developed by V.E. Baskin of the USSR, and a computer code known as DOWN was developed at Princeton University to implement the theory. The theory treats the wake geometry as rigid without interaction between induced velocities and wake structure. The wake structure is assumed to be a flat sheet of vorticity composed of trailing elements whose strength depends on the azimuthal and radial distributions of circulation on a rotor blade. The code predicts the three orthogonal components of flow velocity in the field surrounding the rotor. The predictions can be utilized in rotor performance and helicopter real-time flight-path simulation. The predictive capability of the coded version of the theory was correlated with flow velocity data from several sources. In general, the coded version of flat wake theory provides vertical inflow patterns similar to experimental patterns

Wind tunnel investigation of simulated helicopter engine exhaust interacting with windstream by Craig S Shaw ( Book )
3 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A wind tunnel investigation of the windstream-engine exhaust flow interaction on a light observation helicopter model has been conducted in the Langley V/STOL tunnel. The investigation utilized flow visualization techniques to determine the cause to determine the cause of exhaust shield overheating during cruise and to find a means of eliminating the problem. Exhaust flow attachment to the exhaust shield during cruise was found to cause the overheating. Several flow-altering devices were evaluated to find a suitable way to correct the problem. A flow deflector located on the model cowling upstream of the exhaust in addition to aerodynamic shield fairings provided the best solution. Also evaluated was heat transfer concept employing pin fins to cool future exhaust hardware. The primary flow visualization technique used in the investigation was a newly developed system employing neutrally buoyant helium-filled bubbles. The resultant flow patterns were recorded on motion picture film and on television magnetic tape
