Vichy France and the Jews by Michael Robert Marrus( Book )

What part did Vichy France really play in the Nazi effort to murder Jews living in France? Few questions, from the end of the Second World War to the present day, have so haunted French society. Here for the first time is a detailed and comprehensive account of Vichy's own antisemitic policies and practices. From the summer of 1940 until shortly before the liberation of France in 1944, the Vichy regime, born of defeat at the hands of the Nazis and a policy of collaboration urged by many Frenchmen, introduced and implemented a wide range of measures aimed at Jews living in France. Comparing German documents with newly available French sources, this book conclusively demostrates that, contrary to postwar testimony, Vichy unleashed a wave of antisemitic laws independent of German pressure. On coming to power in 1940, Vichy policy began by banning Jews from positions of public influence and from the military, then moved on to the confiscation of property and internment, and ended by cooperating in the deportation from France, and the death in German camps, of over 75,000 Jews. This lucidly written and rigorously documented book definitively establishes French cooperation with the Final Solution- cooperation, the authors conclude, that was virtually inparalleled in all of Europe. -- Publisher description

Commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the most important judicial proceeding of the twentieth century, this is the first book to examine historically the indictment of 22 Nazi leaders at the end of World War II. Lessons of the Holocaust by Michael Robert Marrus( )

12 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in English and Japanese and held by 496 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sixty years ago, the Holocaust had practically no visibility in examinations of the Second World War. Yet today it is understood to be not only one of the defining moments of the 20th century but also a touchstone in a quest for directions on how to avoid such catastrophes. This book challenges the notion that there are definitive lessons to be deduced from the destruction of European Jewry. Instead, it shows how its lessons are constantly challenged, debated, altered, and reinterpreted. -- Publisher description

Holocaust scholarship : personal trajectories and professional interpretations by Christopher R Browning( Book )

10 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of essays arises from a conference held at the University of Cape Town under the auspices of the Isaac and Jessie Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies and Research. Leading international Holocaust scholars met to reflect on the ways their personal experiences influenced their professional trajectories over many decades of immersion in studies of the Holocaust. Participants examined changes and developments in the field within the context of their own personal odysseys, including shifting cultural milieus and robust academic conflicts. Meeting in South Africa provided a special ambience as the country had emerged only two decades earlier from a race-based system defined by the United Nations as a crime against humanity. The massive corpus of scholarly engagement with the Holocaust - with reverberations across the globe - has ensured that its study today is paradigmatic for scholars exploring genocide, as well as perpetrators and victims of antisemitism, racism, and the Second World War
