"This book, first published in 1982, summarises the history and organisation of the group of co-operatives centred in Mondragon. The study makes an in-depth analysis of its economic aspects, including employment creation and manpower planning, the raising of financial resources and planning of investments, problems of earnings differentials, and the incentives that can be derived from worker-ownership. In particular, the authors examine the operation of the self-management system and Mondragon's production efficiently."--Provided by publisher

Regaining Marxism by Ken Post( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a partisan book, rejecting the assumption of a bankruptcy of Marxist theory in face of the collapse of the state socialist regimes, and countering the criticisms advanced by postmodernist writers and feminists, although it takes the latter very seriously. Viewing Marxism as the indispensable basis for a new 21st-century liberation doctrine, it identifies the basic issue as the nature of the historical subject, which Marx and Engels too readily associated with a white, male industrial proletariat. Starting with the 'philosophical anthropology' of the early Marx, this book takes a concept of common human needs as a way of theorizing concrete historical experience. It sees history in terms of a double development of capitalism, at the 'centre' and on the 'periphery', and pays special attention to consciousness and the non-material aspects of human life, undervalued by Marxism
Accounting for the global economy : measuring world trade and investment linkages by Joke Luttik( Book )

4 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book describes the construction method for a global accounting framework, referred to as the world accounting matrix (WAM). The WAM allows for the consistent presentation of international trade and finance figures in relation to domestic saving and investment. The book shows how a WAM can be used for the analysis of trade and finance in a global context. In addition, it shows how the WAM can contribute to the solution of the large statistical problems in national and global macroeconomic data

External finance in Thailand's development : an interpretation of Thailand's growth boom by Karel Jansen( Book )

7 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between 1987 and 1990 Thailand experienced double-digit growth, fed by high capital inflows. This made Thailand one of the first developing countries to recover from the recession of the 1980s. Since 1990 growth and capital inflows have continued at a high level. The book makes a detailed study of the macroeconomic impact of capital inflows during recent years and during an earlier period when growth, and capital inflows, were high, in the late 1970s. It is shown that the results of the recent period are more sustainable than those of the earlier period, due to the differences in the nature of capital inflows, in external conditions, and in economic policies
Development of societies : the next twenty-five years : proceedings of the ISS 25th anniversary conference, The Hague, December 1977 by Institute of Social Studies (Netherlands)( Book )

6 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume is the product of a conference on the theme 'Development - the Next Twenty-five Years' which the Institute of Social Studies held in Decem ber 1977 to mark its own twenty-fifth anniversaryas a centre of development studies. We felt it appropriate at that point in time to caU together specialists from all over the world in an attempt to assess the 'state of play' in our field as we move into the last quarter of the twentieth century. 1 For several days, therefore, the Institute's new building house d a remarkable concentration of knowledge and experience concerning the problems of the so-calle d less developed countries, drawn from all over the world. Although it was inevitable that the participants should represent the past (and it was several times re marked that, in that sense, there were too few women present), the earnest and sometimes heated discussions looked to the future as much as to what had happened in the last twenty-five years. As the discussions proceeded, three things became apparent. Firstly, although the papers submitted did not fully reveal it, the ongoing debate between radicals and moderates, those who saw possibilities of change only basically through a direct break with existing structures and those who felt change possibIe within them, is by no means at an end
Gender negotiations among Indians in Trinidad, 1917-1947 by Patricia Mohammed( Book )

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is about the struggles of female and male descendants of Indian indentured migrants in Trinidad in the first half of the twentieth century, each desiring to preserve some aspects of the gender system brought from India between 1845 and 1917, which were important to their continued definition of ethnic identity and community in Trinidad. At the same time the situation of migration allows for challenges to the caste system of Hinduism and, for women and some men, new opportunities to confront the more restricting aspect of Indian patriarchy which followed them across the seas from India
