Beyond compliance : China, international organizations, and global security by A. E Kent( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An extensively researched study of Chinese participation in international organizations, Beyond Compliance argues that the record of China's international behavior since the 1970s indicates the long-term effectiveness of the multilateral system. The book concludes that engagement with the multilateral system is the key to the gradual socialization of "rogue" states. Contrasting the People's Republic of China's post-1949 alienation from the international community with its increasing compliance, since it entered the United Nations in 1971, with the rules of leading international institutions, Kent explains China's changing attitude toward international institutions in terms of the most appropriate theories of state compliance. At the same time, she argues that compliance theories on their own are not sufficient to explain the complex interaction between states and the international system, and develops a broader theory to encompass China's behavior."--Jacket

Mental health research in Asia and the Pacific by William A Caudill( Book )

4 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 344 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume is the result of a conference on mental health research in Asia and the Pacific held at the East-West Center, University of Hawaii, in 1966, at which a distinguished multidisciplinary group of investigators from Australasia, Europe, and North America explored such questions as how Asian countries had made use of Western psychiatric theories and techniques to understand similarities and differences in behavior in cross-cultural settings, as well as attempted to reach some agreement on common denominators in human behavior regardless of cultural differences. The editors, Dr. William Caudill, a social anthropologist, and Dr. Tsung-yi Lin, a psychiatric epidemiologist, both of whom participated in the conference, have done an admirable job of organizing the work of their colleagues (and keeping their opinions from intruding) into three topical sections which present the proceedings and discussion in such a way as to be most helpful and economical to the reader

Transcultural research in mental health by William P Lebra( Book )

6 editions published in 1972 in English and Undetermined and held by 309 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume collects papers presented at a 1969 conference, "Social Change and Cultural Factors in Mental Health," held at the University of Hawaii's East-West Center. Editor Lebra succinctly sums up the two themes of the collected papers: (1) in underdeveloped regions, discover the prevalence of mental health disorders and, (2) in "more developed areas," understand and control ourselves before irreparable damage is done to mankind. The volume represents an admirable attempt at cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural communication--no mean undertaking. It will undoubtedly constitute a major source in its field, and is likely to be consulted by specialists in medicine and behavioral science alike. In this regard, editor Lebra, the conference participants, and the East-West Center have made a valuable contribution to our cross-cultural understanding of "psychiatric epidemiology."

Quality in instructional television by Wilbur, Ed Schramm( Book )

2 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The result of an interdisciplinary conference on the qualities of an effective instructional television program, this book reports the ideas of various participants. Two papers by broadcasters represent the producer's view of itv; one deals with instructional television in Sweden and the other with a Nigerian project. The scholar's view is represented by two papers which consider the evidence about some instructional television techniques and its effectiveness. The two papers which comprise the section on combining production and research consider the problem in the light of experiences with "Sesame Street" and "Electric Company." The section on alternatives to television discusses the application of less complex instructional technologies and some of the "smaller" media. Finally, the common ground among these various points of view is summarized. (Sh)
