President Roosevelt and the coming of the war, 1941 : a study in appearances and realities by Charles A Beard( Book )

53 editions published between 1948 and 2017 in English and held by 1,962 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Conceived by Charles Beard as a sequel to his provocative study of American Foreign Policy in the Making, 1932-1940, President Roosevelt and the Coming of the War outraged a nation, permanently damaging Beard's status as America's most influential historian.Beard's main argument is that both Democratic and Republican leaders, but Roosevelt above all, worked quietly in 1940 and 1941 to insinuate the United States into the Second World War. Basing his work on available congressional records and administrative reports, Beard concludes that FDR's image as a neutral, peace-loving leader was a smokescreen, behind which he planned for war against Germany and Japan even well before the attack on Pearl Harbor.Beard contends that the distinction between aiding allies in Europe like Great Britain and maintaining strict neutrality with respect to nations like Germany and Japan was untenable. Beard does not argue that all nations were alike, or that some did and others did not merit American support, but rather that Roosevelt chose to aid Great Britain secretly and unconstitutionally rather than making the case to the American public. President Roosevelt shifted from a policy of neutrality to one of armed intervention, but he did so without surrendering the appearance, the fiction of neutrality. This core argument makes the work no less explosive in 2003 than it was when first issued in 1948."--Provided by publisher

The Supreme Court and the Constitution by Charles A Beard( Book )

57 editions published between 1912 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 1,581 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A thorough analysis of the early history and development of judicial review, this is one of the most cited and highly regarded texts on law and government. Author Charles A. Beard ranks among the twentieth century's preeminent judicial and constitutional scholars. His enlightening and accessible survey examines the U.S. high court's role in interpreting and enforcing the laws of the country's framing documents. It addresses the controversies surrounding the exercise of judicial power, and it dismisses charges of the Supreme Court's usurpation of judicial review powers. Beard explores the intentions of the constitution's framers by delving into the records of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the text of the constitution itself. He places information from these sources into the context of colonial and republican American life, drawing upon memoirs and correspondence of the day for further insights. This edition of his work is supplemented by an appendix and bibliographies, along with an extensive Introduction, "Charles Beard and the American Debate Over Judicial Review, 1790-1961." Students and scholars of political science, history, and law will find this book an indispensable addition to their libraries

The method of economic interpretation is irrevocably identified with the name of Charles A. Beard, mainly due to An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States (1913). Yet, it is Beard's later work, The Economic Basis of Politics (1922), where he articulates the main principles of his method. In this brief survey of Western political philosophy and contemporary constitutional arrangements, Beard concludes that it is well established doctrine that "there is a vital relation between the forms of state and the distribution of property, revolutions in the state being usually the results of contests over property
