"Michael Kohlhaas has been wronged. First his finest horses were unfairly confiscated and mistreated. And things keep going worse-his servants have been beaten, his wife killed, and the lawsuits he pursues are stymied-but Kohlhaas, determined to find justice at all costs, tirelessly persists. Standing up against the bureaucratic machine of the empire, Kohlhaas becomes an indomitable figure that you can't help rooting for from start to finish. Knotty, darkly comical, magnificent in its weirdness, and one of the greatest and most influential tales in German literature, this short novel, first published in German in 1810, is now available in award-winning Michael Hofmann's sparkling new English translation"--

Amphitryon; a comedy by
Heinrich von Kleist(
Book
)
200 editions published between 1807 and 2020 in 12 languages and held by 1,069 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
[Elib]

The Marquise of O- by
Heinrich von Kleist(
Book
)
258 editions published between 1903 and 2021 in 10 languages and held by 1,056 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"A young Marquise, caught in mortal danger in the midst of a furious battle, falls into a deep swoon. She comes round moments later, however, safe within her castle and apparently unharmed, and is able to resume her life in gratitude and complacency. So when, weeks later, she is alarmed by strange periods of faintness and indisposition, the solution that suggests itself seems entirely irrational. How could the widowed young Marquise be pregnant? And what will her parents say?" "Imbued with subtle comic moments and lashed by the passionate outbursts of anger and love experienced by characters caught in a bizarre and unpredictable chain of events, The Marquise of O- is a truly Kleistian twist on the long tradition of sexual drama. Its companion pieces, The Earthquake in Chile and The Foundling, are darker and more uncompromising in flavour, demonstrating, in their flashes of horror and injustice, the full range of Kleist's art."--Jacket

Über das Marionettentheater : Aufsätze und Anekdoten by
Heinrich von Kleist(
Book
)
200 editions published between 1920 and 2019 in 9 languages and held by 848 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The broken pitcher : a comedy in one act by
Heinrich von Kleist(
Book
)
24 editions published between 1961 and 2020 in 3 languages and held by 739 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Broken Jug mocks the failings of human nature and the judicial system in a forgiving way. It is similar to Sophocles' tragedy Oedipus Rex (c. 429 BCE), in that in both plays the judge is guilty, but different insofar as Adam knows from the start who is guilty, as does the audience, and is trying his hardest to conceal the truth. The play follows the story of "Adam" and "Eve". Adam is covered in various injuries and talking with his secretary Licht. The jug is not mentioned in these first five scenes although the audience is made aware that Adam is a highly suspicious character. The trial lasting from scene seven through to scene eleven, shows the characters on stage trying to piece together the events which led to the breaking of the jug. At the end of scene eleven Eve states that Adam broke the jug and Adam escapes in the confusion

The Kleist variations : three plays by
Eric Bentley(
Book
)
10 editions published between 1982 and 2005 in English and held by 458 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"These plays by Eric Bentley - Concord, The Fall of the Amazons, and Wannsee - are variations on plays by Heinrich von Kleist. Concord, which depicts discord in Concord, Massachusetts, around the year 1800, is a variation on The Broken Jug. The Fall of the Amazons, in which the Greek hero Achilles is slain by an Amazon queen, is a variation on the play Penthesilea. Kleist rejected the older version of the story in which Achilles killed her. Kleist's version receives another twist from Bentley. Wannsee, the third play in The Kleist Variations (and also the lake on whose shores Kleist committed suicide), is a variation of Cathy of Heilbronn

"No amount of wisdom could possible make sense of the mysterious verdict which God intended through this duel." One of the few novellas written by the master German playwright, The Duel was considered by Thomas Mann and others to be one of the great works of German literature. The story of a virtuous woman slandered by a nobleman, it is a precise study of a subject that fascinated von Kleist: that people are sometimes seemingly punished for their very innocence
