Composto probabilmente tra la fine del 1302 e i primi mesi del 1305, il trattato sull'eloquenza volgare, lasciato interrotto al secondo libro, è certo tra le voci più importanti del Dante della maturità, contributo fondamentale per capire l'evoluzione del suo pensiero in tema di lingua e di poesia volgare, forse già in fase di ideazione, se non di preparazione, della Commedia, maturata più tardi. Il curatore, Enrico Fenzi, proponendo interessanti varianti di lezione al testo corrente, ne offre una nuova impegnativa edizione corredata di una originale traduzione e di un ampio commento, che cerca di cogliere le suggestioni del discorso dantesco su un tema nuovissimo per il tempo e nel contesto storico in cui veniva affrontato, indagandone le "fonti". Importante novità di questa edizione sono le due serie di testi franco-provenzali e italiani che riproducono integralmente i documenti poetici citati e talvolta discussi da Dante e la seconda appendice con il volgarizzamento del trattato di Giovan Giorgio Trissino, che nel 1529 ha offerto la prima edizione a stampa (tradotta) dell'opera, prima di fatto sconosciuta. Completano l'edizione una preziosa "Nota su La geografia di Dante" di Francesco Bruni, corredata di una serie di cartine geografiche che vogliono offrire un quadro della visione dantesca dell'Europa e dell'Italia geolinguistica, nonché "politica", in base alle conoscenze geografiche del suo tempo, e vari Indici

Partial leaf from a mid-15th century copy of Laurent de Premerfait's second translation of Boccaccio's De casibus virorum illustrium, from the chapter on Theseus (10.1-17), beginning with the rubric Le Xe chappitre contient le cas de Theseus, roy dathenes, Et commence ou latin Athene. Written in lettre bâtarde by a single hand in France, possibly Paris, in 2 columns, bottom of the leaf missing, 48 lines extant out of approximately 60, frame-ruled in lead. Decorated on the recto with an unfinished (outlines and touches of color) 26-line miniature depicting the suicide of Phaedra in the larger upper section and Theseus in exile in Cyprus in the smaller lower section; a border of flowers, acanthus leaves, and gold ivy leaves above the left column and an unfinished (gold leaves only) border on the left side of the left column; and a 5-line initial in pink on gold ground
