Glory of the martyrs by Gregory( Book )

18 editions published between 1988 and 2004 in English and Latin and held by 441 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Contains a series of anecdotes about the lives and cults of Christians who suffered and usually died for their beliefs. These anecdotes provide important historical evidence, first, for the ways bishops and their congregations manipulated traditions about the development of the early Church, and second, for the contemporary functions and meanings of the cults of saints during the sixth century. The spontaneity and literary modesty of many of the anecdotes make them especially valuable for modern historians intent upon understanding the early Frankish Church. In addition to the translation, this volume includes an introduction and commentary. The introduction summarizes essential information about the chronology, composition and purposes of the "Glory of the Martyrs", and also discusses other relevant topics, such as the role of these anecdotes in the celebration of the liturgy and the contrast between 'rusticity' and correct behaviours and belief. The commentary provides only basic identifications, dates, background and references to other secondary scholarly literature
The Merovingians by Gregory( Book )

6 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and held by 358 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Georgius Florentius Gregorius, better known to posterity as Gregory, Bishop of Tours, was born about 538 to a highly distinguished Gallo-Roman family in Clermont in the region of Auvergne. Best known for his 10-book Histories (often called the History of the Franks), Gregory left us detailed accounts of his own times as well as those of the early Merovingian kings, known as the "long-haired kings," who united the Franks and took control of most of Gaul in the late fifth and early sixth century. Although he is one of the most important historians of pre-modern times, the complex, apparently disconnected, elements of Gregory's work are often difficult for today's readers to understand. This selected, new translation is composed of extensive sections from Books II to X and follows in a connected narrative the political events of the Histories from the appearance of the first Merovingian kings, Merovech, Childeric, and Clovis to the last years of the reigns of Guntram and Childebert II in the late sixth century. This book is designed to introduce new readers, and even experienced ones, to the political world (secular and ecclesiastical) of sixth-century Gaul and to provide an up-to-date guide to reading the bishop of Tours' fascinating account of his times. Included in this volume are twenty-one drawings by Jean-Paul Laurens, a nineteenth-century French historical artist and interpreter of the Merovingians

Lives and miracles by Gregory( Book )

6 editions published in 2015 in English and Latin and held by 190 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gregory of Tours served as bishop of Tours, then a city in the Frankish kingdom, from 563-594. Acclaimed by the French as "the father of our history" on account of his 'History of the Franks', he also wrote stories about holy men and women and about wondrous events he experienced, witnessed, or knew as miracles. In our times many people deny the existence of miracles, while others use the term so loosely that it becomes almost meaningless. Must a true miracle transcend "natural laws"? Gregory's lively stories relate what he regarded as the visible results of holy power, direct or mediated, and its role in the lives of his contemporaries. His conversational narratives, which are largely without self-conscious stylistic effects, present unique, often moving, glimpses into his world. For Gregory, the frontiers between interior and exterior, God and matter, word or gesture and its referent, remained fluid. 'Lives and Miracles' includes the texts of 'The Life of the Fathers', 'The Miracles of the Martyr Julian', and 'The Miracles of Bishop Martin'. (Book jacket)

La vie des Pères by Gregory( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in French and Latin and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
