Erika Kohut, a piano teacher at the Vienna Conservatory, is in her 40's and still lives with her mother. Their relationship is deeply disturbed, but it is Erika's twisted sexuality which dominates her, visiting porn cinemas and peep shows. Her life is dramatically disturbed by a handsome young student who feels his musical talent is not sufficiently appreciated by Kohut. As the relationship between teacher and pupil spirals rapidly out of control, Jellnek paints a terrifying picture of a woman consumed by the ecstasy of self-destruction
Lust by Elfriede Jelinek( Book )

121 editions published between 1989 and 2013 in 15 languages and held by 1,512 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a quaint Austrian ski resort, things are not quite what they seem. Hermann, the manager of a paper mill, has decided that sexual gratification begins at home. Which means Gerti - his wife and property. Gerti is not asked how she feels about the use Hermann puts her to. She is a receptacle into which Hermann pours his juices, nastily, briefly, brutally. The long-suffering and battered Gerti thinks she has found her saviour and love in Michael, a student who rescues her after a day of vigorous use by her husband. But Michael is on his way up the Austrian political ladder, and he is, after all, a man." "In Elfriede Jelinek's mitteleuropa, love is as distant from sex as the Alps are from the sea, and the everyday mechanics of husband, wife, and child become a loveless horror. Both a condemnation of the myth of romantic love and an angry defence of women's sexuality, Lust is pornography for pessimists." "A bestseller throughout Europe, Lust confirms Elfriede Jelinek as the most challenging writer - female or male - in Europe today. It is a dark, dazzling performance."--Jacket

Ein Sportstück by Elfriede Jelinek( Book )

46 editions published between 1998 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 516 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sports Play (written in 1998, original title: Ein Sportstuck) is a post-dramatic text that explores the marketing and sale of the human body and of emotions in sport. Jelinek questions contemporary society's obsession with fitness and body image and rejects the romanticized notion of sport as portrayed in today's media. She considers sport as a mass phenomenon and as a medium for chauvinism and fanaticism--sport as war. At the same time this is one of Jelinek's most personal plays in which she styles herself as "Elfie Electra" and mixes anger with self-irony. Blurring the boundaries between a theatre event and a sports event, this performance turns Jelinek's linguistic gymnastics into an Olympic feat for the actors and audiences alike

Er nicht als er (zu, mit Robert Walser) : ein Stück by Elfriede Jelinek( Book )

29 editions published between 1997 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 355 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"'Her not all her' is a play about, from, and to the great Swiss writer Robert Walser, by the great Austrian writer and Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek. It highlights what Jelinek calls 'the fundamental fragmentation' of Walser's voice, revealing Walser as 'one of those people who, when they said "I", did not mean themselves'. Presented here in a prize-winning translation by Damion Searls, it shows Jelinek to be an impassioned virtuoso reader of classic European writers. The cahier contains an essay by the Director of the Robert Walser Centre, Reto Sorg, and thirteen paintings by the British artist Thomas Newbolt"--Publisher's website
