Traits of school achievers from a deprived background by Helen Hiller Davidson( Book )

3 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was conducted to determine the cognitive, affective, motivational, and physical characteristics of high-achieving students from a deprived environment. The relationship of the student's sex to his achievement status was also assessed. The subjects, 160 10-year-old fifth-grade negro children, were divided into low-achieving and high-achieving groups. Research personnel administered to all children both individual and group psychological tests, such as an object sorting task and the wechsler intelligence scale for children, and several paper and pencil group devices such as the self-appraisal scale. In addition, each child was interviewed by a psychologist and appraised by his classroom teacher. Significantly, the self- and teacher-appraisals correlated most highly with the student's achievement status. The high-achievers were more stable, self-realizing, and cautious in their thinking. Also, they were more successful than the low-achievers at those tasks requiring verbal information, conceptual abilities, and cognitive skills. Thus the high-achievers surpassed the low-achievers in those abilities and skills traditionally emphasized in school. They did not surpass them, however, in linguistic complexity, creativity, and curiosity. Organizational skills, formal language, and emotional anxiety were some of the problem areas common to both groups. The school must be careful not to ignore these strengths and weaknesses, and should develop cognitive and ego competence in both low- and high-achievers. Relevant data is presented in the appendixes to this extensive report. Improved techniques for gasifying coal : Fifth quarterly report by Robert A Graff( Book )

in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fluidization experiments were conducted with FCC and sand in the modified 6-inch system. The experiments with FCC show that at a given gas velocity and for the same driving force, solid rates and fluidized densities in the modified fast bed were comparable to those recorded in the earlier arrangement which utilized the U-tube to transfer solids from the slow to the fast bed. The efficiency of the primary cyclone was measured during experiments with FCC in the modified 6-inch system incorporating a modified cyclone. Efficiencies beyond 99.5% were achieved at high solid rates. Experiments were conducted with several solids in the two-dimensional bed to characterize the behavior of a bed of solid as the velocity across it is gradually increased. Results are given for HFZ-20. The transition from bubbling to the so-called turbulent regime was observed to occur gradually rather than sharply. Flash hydrogenation of short residence time solvent refined coal was conducted on samples provided by Mobil Research and Development Corp. The product distributions show that SRC slightly richer for flash hydrogenation than raw coal. The strong similarity to raw coal is, however, the most striking aspect of the data. Techniques for analysis of light oils were improved by a liquid nitrogen cooled U-tube added downstream of the reactor to trap and collect liquid samples. A new column was tested in the gas chromatograph for the analysis of these liquids. Tests to detect cracking of methane in the main flow control valve of the steam reactor system show that it is not a matter for concern

Development of an instrument for eliciting and evaluating vocational imagery, cooperative research project no. 1368 by City University of New York( Book )

2 editions published in 1962 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study was conducted to (1) produce an instrument for eliciting vocational imagery for use in the educational-vocational orientation and counseling of high school youth, and (2) develop a scale for evaluating the maturity of the vocational imagery elicited by the instrument. A previously designed instrument "what I think of myself" (a semiprojective type for controlled composition) was revised on the basis of analyses of over 280 protocols obtained on earlier pilot studies. The modified questionnaire was readministered to over 210 students in the eighth, eleventh, and twelfth grades from three public schools. Resulting protocols were analyzed, primarily, on the bases of authenticity, variety, comprehensiveness, and meaningfulness of the student disclosures. Study protocols were rated by selected judges in terms of the degree of vocational maturity evidenced, to develop an inductive "maturity scale." Maturity assessments were correlated with data obtained from students' cumulative records and with vocational choices manifested in declarations of plans to school counselors. Immaturity evidenced in students' vocational thinking and imagery was characterized by confusion, stereotyped outlooks and aspirations, and omnipotent fantasy. The modified questionnaire appeared to reach a deeper level of involvement and fantasy expression of students than had been shown previously by other structured methods. In general, the research produced insights on how to be more effective in reaching students at significant levels, to elicit vocational material, and to enhance their awareness and understanding of themselves.
