A theory of cognitive dissonance by Leon Festinger( Book )

109 editions published between 1957 and 2017 in 6 languages and held by 2,118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Leon Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance has been widely recognized for its important and influential concepts in areas of motivation and social psychology. The theory of dissonance is here applied to the problem of why partial reward, delay of reward , and effort expenditure during training result in increased resistance to extinction. The author contends that a state of impasse exists within learning theory largely because some of its major assumptions stand in apparent opposition to certain well-established experimental results. The book puts forward a new theory that seems to reconcile these data and assumptions. This new theory can account for data with which other theories have difficulty: it integrates empirical phenomena that have been regarded as unrelated, and it is supported by the results of experiments designed specifically to test its implications. These experiments are fully described in the text. -- Amazon.com

Theory and experiment in social communication by University of Michigan( )

28 editions published between 1900 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 265 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book compiles findings from the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the University of Michigan. The members of this group conducted a program of research, including two field studies and a number of laboratory experiments, in the area of social communication. This compilation presents the reports of the laboratory studies together with a theoretical orientation of the work that has been done. These studies have centered mainly on two sets of problems, namely, communication stemming from pressures toward uniformity in groups and communication in hierarchical structures. The reports of the experiments in this compilation are along these lines. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)

Deviancy; the psychology of being different by Jonathan L Freedman( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Deviancy: The Psychology of Being Different discusses the effects of deviancy on behavior. The book describes the effect of deviancy per se, in no reference to any particular deviant characteristic. The authors explain the methods they used in this study, as well as some checks made on the study to insure accuracy. Deviants prefer to associate with others of their kind due to fear of rejection, and they tended not to reveal their deviancy. The authors also discuss how deviants and non-deviants react and treat each other, and the degree of aggression that will be shown to a member of either gro
When prophecy fails : a social and psychological study of a modern group that predicted the destination of the world by Leon Festinger( Book )

1 edition published in 1964 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The behaviour of a small group of people who believe that they have been forewarned of the impending end of the world would be dismissed by many social scientists as interesting but hardly researchable. The authors of this book are to be commended, not only for undertaking a difficult task, but for doing it remarkably well...Using the participant observer method, this research team collected an impressive body of data in the brief span of two months. Their research resulted in convincing, if not definitive, confirmation of their hypotheses. At the same time, it constitutes a stimulating example of the adaptation of method to a significant subject, rather than the selection of the research topic because it fits the latest fads in methodology." When prophecy fails : a social and psychological study of a modern group that predicted the destruction of the world by Leon Festinger( )

8 editions published between 1956 and 2017 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study reported in this volume grew out of some theoretical work, one phase of which bore specifically on the behavior of individuals in social movements that made specific (and unfulfilled) prophecies. We had been forced to depend chiefly on historical records to judge the adequacy of our theoretical ideas until we by chance discovered the social movement that we report in this book. At the time we learned of it, the movement was in mid-career but the prophecy about which it was centered had not yet been disconfirmed. We were understandably eager to undertake a study that could test our th
