The enduring questions : main problems of philosophy by Melvin Rader( Book )

28 editions published between 1956 and 1991 in English and Chinese and held by 1,153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Enduring Questions has grown out of the conviction that the great philosophers have grappled with questions that are enduring because they are of deep concern to every thoughtful individual. Substantial progress has been made in clarifying and answering these questions, but they are not ephemeral and not easily dismissed. In stressing the universal and permanent values of the Western philosophical tradition, the book draws mainly upon acknowledged classics, including the best of recent philosophy. And by emphasizing such issues as free will versus determinism the book has acquired a sharply interrogative character. The editorial comments stress the questions to which the readings naturally give rise

Ethics and the human community by Melvin Rader( Book )

12 editions published between 1964 and 1966 in English and held by 451 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Addressing himself to basic ethical questions -- What is the essential value of life? What is right action? What is the nature of a good social order? -- the author seeks to find his answers in the humanist spirit of philosophy. The author takes his quest beyond the limits of personal ethics. Viewing man both as an individual and as a member of society, he examines, among various themes, the meaning and implications of the community as an ethical concept. In so doing, he refers to such related fields as religion, law, sociology and political theory, but the primary focus of the book is on basic sources and central issues. Far more than most writers on ethics, he deals with the concept of justice, and with human rights and liberties; the values of democracy he treats at length and relates to the individual. The result is a text of depth and distinction that deals with the total human personality in the dynamic context of a functioning society

False witness by Melvin Rader( Book )

6 editions published between 1969 and 1979 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the summer of 1948, with Cold War tensions rising, a young state legislator front Spokane, Washington, named Albert Canwell set out to combat the "communist menace" through a state version of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. University of Washington professor Melvin Rader was a victim of the Canwell Committee's rush to judgment, but he fought back. False Witness tells of his struggle to clear his name. It is a testament of personal courage in the face of mass hysteria and a cautionary example of how basic freedoms can rapidly erode when the powers of the state are allowed to serve a rigid ideological agenda. Fifty years after the Canwell Committee's inception, False Witness is reissued as part of the All Powers Project, a multidisciplinary effort by the University of Washington to recreate, reexamine, and redefine the significance today of those tumultuous times. The book includes a new Afterword by Leonard Schroeter, a Seattle attorney and activist who succeeded Melvin Rader as president of the Washington chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union
