A feasibility study of a multi media catalogue by Bernard Chibnall( Book )

5 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this study was to identify various media in which material is to be cataloged and the information about each that is required; to consider an effective system of classification and cataloging which would be compatible with extant national and international systems; to outline the organization necessary to collect, process and disseminate the information and prepare estimates of cost; and to list distributors of materials from whom information would be sought and with whom contact would need to be maintained. The first section of the report considers the broad problems of collection and dissemination and attempts to relate them to other developments in the field. The second section describes the content of the ideal catalog; examines the cataloging being done by agencies in the field; and in the light of these two factors makes recommendations as to the feasibility of the catalog. The appendices include charts and tables, a sample budget, a suggested system of media classification, and a list of sources of materials. Co-operation in library automation : the COLA project : report of a research project undertaken by LASER and supported by a grant from the British Library Research and Development Department during the period November, 1974 to March, 1975 by London and South Eastern Library Region( Book )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first stage of a study on the potential for collaborative development in library automation involved a study of more than 150 recent reports and papers, and visits to library sites in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, West Germany, and the United States. Systems models were advanced to provide a basis for testing development proposals. Further study was recommended on the following topics: (1) minicomputer based library package systems; (2) the problems of handling non-MARC materials in computerized systems; and (3) the potential for a library oriented computer language. It was concluded that cooperation in library automation is both practical and desirable. (Author/EMH)

Library automation : guidelines to costing by Geoffrey Ford( Book )

4 editions published between 1973 and 1974 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As with all new programs, the costs associated with library automation must be carefully considered before implementation. This document suggests guidelines to be followed and areas to be considered in the costing of library procedures. An existing system model has been suggested as a standard (Appendix a) and a classification of library tasks originally devised for the British Library is put forward as a tentative basis for a standard (Appendix b). A check list of cost headings is given in Appendix G. Given a basis such as is provided by these, the costing of manual and automated procedures can proceed. Appendices c-f refer to particular data recording methods. The heads to be considered in costing proposed systems (in particular, automated systems) are covered in some detail, and it is recommended that decisions on implementation of new systems are made only after estimates of costs have been made for a well-defined planning period. An accurate knowledge of costs assists in the decision-making process. Costing is a straightforward exercise when carried out systematically; the difficult task is the allocation of resources. In the university field this includes a long look at the university as a whole, and this work is now beginning to be done. The appendices to this report are intended to give assistance in the analysis of costs and the preparation of budgets. (Author/SJ)

Computer typesetting in the U.K. : a review by H.J Davis( Book )

1 edition published in 1969 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper provides a review of computer typesetting in the United Kingdom with an emphasis on the use of data originating from a computer rather than from a printing environment. It explains the need for an alternative to the computer line-printer when large amounts of data are being processed, and the effect of new techniques on the printing industry. A selection of current and potential applications is reported under sectional headings to illustrate the range and volume of possible development. The use of data banks to provide a source of copy for the production of varied publications is dealt with, and an estimate of future trends is offered. (Author)
