Some predicted climatic effects of a simulated Sahara lake by R. Robert Rapp( Book )

4 editions published between 1974 and 1975 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Results of simulating the addition of a large body of water to the Sahara Desert using the Rand version of the Mintz-Arakawa general circulation model. The simulated lake is a relatively small perturbation to the earth's boundary condition and was chosen to test the hypothesis that an observable and statistically significant change would be produced in the local circulation. The flux and flux divergence of water vapor over North Africa was studied to determine where the water added to the atmosphere by the lake would be precipitated. A significant change in precipitation was subsequently observed over the selected area. A new statistical measure is described and used to measure the significance of the observed change. (Author)

A model of global climate and ecology by William R Graham( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Considerable progress has been made in recent years in understanding the ecology and the effects of man's activities upon regions the size of lakes, estuaries, forests, and grasslands. As man's intrusions into these ecosystems have increased in recent decades, urgent and acute problems have arisen which demand the immediate application and extension of local ecosystem research. There is, in addition, a problem on a larger scale. This is the problem of the long term, persistent effects of man's activities when viewed on a global scale. Will man, carrying his proliferation of works and bodies into the future, seriously (and possibly irreversibly) affect the global climate, his own food supply, and even the biological balance of the planet. The paper discusses the feasibility of answering, in a quantitative way, that question

The reliability of ground-based digital computers by Rodger R Lowe( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This Memorandum discusses the many aspects (both qualitative and quantitative) of obtaining a reliable digital computer and, in particular, investigates that class of ground-based data processing systems where repair is possible. The study begins by reviewing the reliability of computer parts (transistors, capacitors, integrated circuits) and applies the results to a large variety of probabilistic models of system availability. Further, it discusses the availability of ground-based data processing systems--specifically, the probability that a repairable computer which should be ready will in fact be ready for use at some arbitrary future time. It is concluded that part failure distributions show a form of decreasing failure rates for the entire population which in no way correlates with the predicted behavior of the ideal part. The total part population shows a decreasing failure rate because, and only because, various controllably small subgroups show initially increasing failure rates until every member of the subgroup has failed, at which time the failure rate of the entire population effectively decreases. Next, the authors survey the various machine structures which yield higher reliability and show that, where service is available, redundancy is never a contender as a means to high reliability. With service, the multi-processor (duplex or triplex), second highest. (Author)

An experiment on the sensitivity of a global circulation model: studies in climate dynamics for environmental security by Michael Warshaw( Book )

3 editions published between 1972 and 1974 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Results are given for a series of six 60-day integrations of the Mintz-Arakawa two-level, global-circulation model, designed to test the hypothesis that sizable changes in boundary conditions could be detected in the solutions even in the presence of uncertainties in the initial conditions. The variables considered are zonally averaged and time averaged values from the last 30 days of each 60-day run; the significance of the changes is tested by a classical analysis-of-variance technique
Working it through by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross( Book )

6 editions published between 1982 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The companion guide to Elisabeth KUbler-Ross's famous workshops on death and dying This remarkable guide to coping with death and dying grew out of Dr. Elisabeth KUbler-Ross's realization that she could help larger numbers of terminally ill people directly by meeting with them in groups. The first such meeting in 1970 led to hundreds more throughout the United States and the world and now to Working It Through, a testament to "faith and the ability to survive and transcend the most difficult trials in life" as KUbler-Ross writes in her foreword. The photographer Mal Warshaw has documented the workshops, and his moving photographs bring this already powerful book to life
