Controversies in voting behavior by Richard G Niemi( Book )

35 editions published between 1976 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,544 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The readings in this volume are organized around five debates: Is political participation declining or simply changing form? How important are informational differences among voters? Are economic factors weakening as vote determinants? Is the American electorate polarized? What are the sources of the Republican realignment in the South? The editors supply section introductions that weave the readings together, establish context, and sort out the conflicting interpretations and diverging opinions that emerge across the chapters

Central tendency and variability by Herbert F Weisberg( Book )

23 editions published between 1992 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 613 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Using a clear, expository style that builds from simple to more complex topics, Weisberg explains how to measure the center and variation on a single variable. Beginning with an exploration of how to measure variables with different numeric or nonnumeric properties, the volume covers such important topics as how to examine distribution of variables, how to measure the spread of a variable in order to see how much the values on the variable differ, how to generalize the sample results to the population, and the use of exploratory data analysis to measure center and spread. Researchers, practitioners, and students who need a "refresher" before doing a bivariate or multivariate analysis will find this book the perfect guide."--Pub. desc

Great theatre : the American Congress in the 1990s by Samuel C Patterson( Book )

11 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 575 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Using the theatre metaphor to characterize the actions of Congress and to help make the institution more understandable, congressional life and behavior are dissected and placed in the broader context of changes in Congress in the 1990s. The contributors evaluate the way members of Congress play to the media and the larger audience, the electorate; analyze leadership roles in a cast of 535 "leading players"; evaluate the committee systems as "little theatre"; and analyze relations among the various branches of government. Coeditors Herbert Weisberg and Samuel Patterson conclude the unique presentation by reminding us that in Congress, "the play's the thing."
An introduction to survey research, polling, and data analysis by Herbert F Weisberg( Book )

16 editions published between 1996 and 1999 in English and held by 568 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why should we believe the results of surveys based on relatively few interviews? What are the appropriate cautions in interpreting survey reports? Aimed at answering these questions, An Introduction to Survey Research, Polling, and Data Analysis, Third Edition describes how surveys are conducted in such a way that they can be believed, explains how to read statistical reports and analyze data, and provides guidelines that are useful in evaluating polls. Using frequent examples from contemporary, large national surveys and polls as well as from the media, the authors stress understanding tables thoroughly before moving to interval statistics. In addition, they cover survey design, sampling and question-writing steps, interviewing and coding strategies, and survey analysis from frequency distributions and cross-tabulations to control tables and correlation/regression. They also cover the ethics of survey research and how to read and write survey research reports. Readers of this book will learn to distinguish good from bad polls and to better design and conduct their own surveys and polls."--Jacket

Political science : the science of politics by Herbert F Weisberg( Book )

20 editions published between 1983 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 463 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If at one time we thought that the movement to science would yield unification of the discipline, it is now apparent that there are many roads to science. Still, it is important for us to consider yet again what the appropriate goals are for our scientific enterprise. What works in theory building; induction and deduction; prediction and control; the search for useful principles to guide us examining these questions, we can build a better science. Political science has come so far as a discipline that different schools and scholars have different interpretations of science in the study of politics, and that diversity is important to maintain. Advances made in the study of political institutions and behavior are described in 12 essays from the 1983 annual meeting of the American Political Science Association. They do not employ any single approach to the study of the science of politics. Taken as a whole, they illustrate the multiplicity of interpretations that are presently given to the common enterprise
The total survey error approach : a guide to the new science of survey research by Herbert F Weisberg( Book )

15 editions published in 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 336 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1939, George Gallup's American Institute of Public Opinion published a pamphlet optimistically titled The New Science of Public Opinion Measurement. At the time, though, survey research was in its infancy, and only now, six decades later, can public opinion measurement be appropriately called a science, based in part on the development of the total survey error approach. Herbert F. Weisberg's handbook presents a unified method for conducting good survey research centered on the various types of errors that can occur in surveys--from measurement and nonresponse error to coverage and sampling

Political participation : an ISSC workbook in comparative analysis by Herbert B Asher( Book )

11 editions published between 1984 and 1986 in 3 languages and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This instructional collection presents subsets of data from existing national election studies which allow students to perform cross-national analyses of political participation. Data are provided for the following eight countries: Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, and Germany. These countries were chosen by assessing the availability of ample and comparable measures of participation in the context of a national election, and by the presence of properties in these coutries that seemed likely to highlight the advantages of comparative analysis. Variables in the datasets reflect a perspective on political participation limited to election and campaign activities such as voting, working on behalf of a candidate, contributing money, displaying a button or bumper sticker, attending a rally, and discussing the campaign, as well as more general measures of interest in and attentiveness to campaigns and politics. In addition, measures of party identification and other demographic information are available in these datasets ... Cf.: http://dx.doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR08350
