Teaching English as a second language by Mary Bonomo Finocchiaro( Book )

32 editions published between 1958 and 1979 in English and Undetermined and held by 687 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the blurb: Unlike any other work on the subject, this book brings together theories in general education, in foreign-language teaching, and in the teaching of English and shows how these can contribute to effective instruction and learning. It adheres to no single formula but draws on a variety of methods, all of which have proved to be workable. Materials are included that the teacher of English as a second language needs to guide her long-term or daily planning, such as a course of study for beginning language learners, examples of language-culture lesson units, and typical tests. Specific illustrations are offered that enable the teacher to develop in pupils the ability to communicate needs, interests, and ideas. The author stresses throughout the importance of relating the teaching of reading, writing, and speech to the general setting of school and community-and, more broadly, to the social and cultural patterns of the countries where English is spoken. Although the book is designed primarily for use by teachers of English on the elementary and secondary school levels, the practices that are advocated can be utilized with equal effectiveness in teaching students of any age. Since no specific population or ethnic background was considered in the preparation of the material, the book can be used in any corner of the world where English is taught. The author's advice on curriculum planning, classroom atmosphere, devices for vitalizing learning, programs for young and advanced pupils, and the measurement of results will be welcomed by all who work in this field
Teaching children foreign languages by Mary Bonomo Finocchiaro( Book )

25 editions published in 1964 in 4 languages and held by 679 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Some administrators and citizens still question the advisability of offering a second language to children. FLES should no longer be considered in the experimental stage. This book is directed primarily to the teacher and to the administrator who wants to provide as much help to the teacher as possible. In harmony with the philosophy of building on what has been tried successfully, examples of classroom practices and materials that have been subjected to the test of actual use for many years will be given in this book, together with samples or models of materials exactly as they were used. A brief chapter will be devoted to the principles and procedures underlying the preparation or adaptation of classroom materials. - Introduction
The functional-notional approach : from theory to practice by Mary Bonomo Finocchiaro( Book )

34 editions published between 1983 and 1988 in English and held by 553 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Both the theoretical basis of functional-notionalism and its practical classroom applications are discussed in this text. The major characteristic of the functional-notional approach to language teaching is a sensitivity to the individual needs of students. Based on the idea that the ability to use real, appropriate language to communicate with others is the primary goal of most foreign language learning, the design of a functional-notional curriculum contributes to the goal of communication and interaction from the first day of study. Major emphasis is placed on the communicative purposes of a speech act. Featured in the text are (1) a historical overview of language learning and teaching, (2) definitions of terms, (3) characteristics of the approach, (4) lists of functions and notions, (5) step-by-step techniques, (6) communicative activities, (7) the role of grammar, and (8) evaluation procedures. Discussion is included of general methodology and strategies that have been found most effective in helping learners use the language appropriately in a variety of real-world situations, as well as reading, writing, and grammar instructional techniques. 38 editions published between 1964 and 1972 in English and held by 282 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Designed for use both in the United States and abroad, this manual for teachers of English as a second language is concerned with "minimum essentials" and is written in lay language. In the first chapter, the author deals with the nature of language and language learning; some features of the English language; students, school and community; and contributions of other sciences. In Chapters ii and iii, she discusses curriculum development and language skills and in Chapters iv and v, materials and techniques of instruction, testing and evaluation. In the final chapter she offers practical suggestions for dealing with such classroom problems as overly large groups, slow or disinterested students, and disparity of linguistic backgrounds and age. Appended to this guide are definitions of useful terms, a bibliography, some additional resources, and an index. (Amm)
Foreign language testing : a practical approach by Mary Bonomo Finocchiaro( Book )

14 editions published in 1983 in English and Undetermined and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This text on foreign language testing provides an overview of testing principles, problems, and practices, and examines the multiple roles of the classroom teacher, as well as the construction and scoring of more formal language tests. The following types or foreign language tests are distinguished: achievement or attainment tests, proficiency tests, diagnostic language tests, and aptitude tests. The importance of validity, reliability, comprehensiveness, and practicality in preparing and using foreign language tests is also considered. Student measurement, instructional evaluation, and curriculum evaluation are identified as uses of language test results. The importance of determining test objectives for formal tests is addressed. Formal language tests include language aptitude tests, specialized terminology tests in special purpose courses, language behavior tests, communicative competence tests, and translation tests. The following additional topics are addressed: the preparation of alternate forms, pretesting and posttesting, special grading systems used in achievement tests, grading systems for proficiency tests, and writing a test manual. Appended materials include a test administration manual for listening and reading comprehension of English for speakers of other languages; examples of test items; and a bibliography of books and articles, periodicals and reports, organizations, test publishers, and tests (with information on each test). Let's talk. A book of conversations by Mary Bonomo Finocchiaro( Book )

9 editions published between 1970 and 1977 in English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book of short conversational dialogues is intended for students of English as a second language or as a second dialect, of any native language background and at any level of instruction. Suggestions for grading and adapting the materials to suit students' needs, as well as instructions on drill techniques, are provided in a prefatory section for the teacher. The dialogues are of three types: (1) brief conversational exchanges, generally composed of two or three single utterances, and graded for difficulty; (2) sustained, in which the speakers make more than one utterance, either in the opening exchange or in the response; and (3) spiral, in which a series of brief dialogues deal with only one theme, but grow progressively more complex. Cultural content includes such everyday topics as greetings and introductions, time, dates, weather and seasons, the family, home, school and job, people and places in the immediate and the wider community. A special section of dialogues for younger learners is included. A reference guide and index concludes the volume. (Amm)
