The wealth and poverty of nations : why some are so rich and some so poor by David S Landes( Book )

146 editions published between 1998 and 2015 in 14 languages and held by 3,797 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"David S. Landes tells the long, fascinating story of wealth and power throughout the world: the creation of wealth, the paths of winners and losers, the rise and fall of nations. He studies history as a process, attempting to understand how the world's cultures lead to - or retard - economic and military success and material achievement." "Countries of the West, Landes asserts, prospered early through the interplay of a vital, open society focused on work and knowledge, which led to increased productivity, the creation of new technologies, and the pursuit of change. Europe's key advantage lay in invention and know-how, as applied in war, transportation, generation of power, and skill in metalwork. Even such now banal inventions as eyeglasses and the clock were, in their day, powerful levers that tipped the balance of world economic power. Today's new economic winners are following much the same roads to power, while the laggards have somehow failed to duplicate this crucial formula for success." "The key to relieving much of the world's poverty lies in understanding the lessons history has to teach us - lessons uniquely imparted in this towering work of history."--Jacket

The unbound Prometheus: technological change and industrial development in Western Europe from 1750 to the present by David S Landes( Book )

102 editions published between 1960 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 2,074 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study first appeared as a chapter in volume VI of the Cambridge Economic History of Europe. The author has now extended it by adding a full-scale analysis of modern industrial Europe from the First World War to the 1960s. In the introduction, he discusses the characteristics, progress, and political, economic and social implications of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, France and Germany. He raises the general question: why was Europe the first to industrialize? His section on the inter-war years covers the effect of the First World War in accelerating the dissolution of the old international economy, the reasons for monetary instability and the consequences of monetary difficulties for the economic history of Europe. In particular he discusses the causes of the economic crisis of 1929-1932, the reasons for its severity and quasi-universality and for Britain's early and sustained recovery. An important theme is the impediments posed by generalized international egoism to the efficiency and growth of the European economies. In the final chapter on the economic recovery of Western Europe after the Second World War, he examines the forces which have operated since the early 1950s to give Western Europe a period of unprecedented economic growth. He raises the vital question: is this recent boom a temporary phenomenon or the first stage in a new trend of more rapid growth, reflecting an acceleration in technological advance?

Dynasties : fortunes and misfortunes of the world's great family businesses by David S Landes( Recording )

13 editions published between 2006 and 2009 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beginning as a work of economics, moving through soap opera and finishing as history, this book tells the stories of 11 great family businesses in Europe, Japan and America with at least three generations of family control. Observing that the vast majority of businesses are family owned and run, historian Landes (The Wealth and Poverty of Nations) argues that dynastic businesses offer a proven route to developing emerging markets, while companies managed by unrelated professionals and funded by public investors offer mostly bad jobs and slim profit shares to local employees. Even among the largest corporations, many retain significant financial and managerial involvement by the founder's relatives, and those that do perform better than the others. Landes's stories emphasize emotional life within these dynasties; he includes business details and general economic history only as context for family adventures and feuds. His emphasis is on how family considerations such as authority, love, trust, envy, marriage, adoption and succession determine the growth and direction of the business. While this may seem irrational compared to entrusting strategic decisions to specialized professionals selected according to talent rather than bloodline, Landes argues that family does a better job

What legislators need to know about long-term care insurance by David S Landes( Book )

2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This booklet discusses the potential importance to states of long-term care insurance, describes general policy characteristics, and summarizes state actions to both regulate and promote long-term care insurance. It is intended as a resource for legislators and others involved in long-term care financing and public policy formulation. Long-term care insurance is defined as an emerging private financing mechanism for long-term care services--services that are required due to a chronic illness or a condition lasting over a prolonged period of time. It is noted that currently government payment is available through Medicaid only for the poor or for those who have depleted all their own resources, and that states have begun searching for ways to limit the amount of assets that must be spent before becoming eligible for Medicaid. The answers to the following seven questions are discussed in detail: (1) What are long-term care and long-term care insurance?; (2) Why is long-term care insurance an important issue for state legislatures?; (3) What types of long-term care insurance policies are available?; (4) What are the barriers to the expansion of long-term care insurance?; (5) What have states done to regulate the sale and content of long-term care insurance policies?; (6) What have states done to encourage the sale of long-term care insurance?; And (7) What is the future of long-term care insurance? References are included in 72 end notes. (Author/ABL)
Major health issues for states, 1987 by David S Landes( Book )

2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Health care will continue to occupy a prominent place in state legislative deliberations, as indicated by the National Conference of State Legislatures' 1987 State Issues Survey. The survey addressed state actions in these health issue areas: (1) health care for the medically indigent; (2) medical malpractice; (3) certificate of need and health planning; (4) long-term care and Alzheimer's disease; (5) Medicaid and medical assistance programs; (6) professional licensure; (7) organ transplantation and donation; (8) Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome; (9) health insurance; (10) state employee health plans; and (11) hospitals. The survey form was sent to legislators in all 50 states with 39 states responding. For each of the 11 issues, respondents were given a number of possible actions state legislatures might consider. They were also asked to describe additional actions not included in the list. (Results are discussed for each of the 11 topics. Tables with responses from each state are provided for each topic.)
