Pt. 1 is about the four daguerreotypes offered for sale in the November 1998 issue of The daguerreian forum. The daguerreotypes came from an auction at the Gardner House in Exeter, New Hampshire. Ports. identifed are John Thoreau, Aunt Maria Thoreau, Sophia Thoreau and Helen Thoreau. Pt. 2 is about two more daguerreotypes that were purchased from the Gardner House auction at the same time the four above mentioned were purchased but were not offered for sale in the daguerreian forum. Ports, identified are Sophia Thoreau, different from the one mentioned above, and Aunt Louisa Dunbar. The question raised throughout these two articles is: what is the connection between the Thoreaus of Concord, Mass. and the Gardners of Exeter, New Hampshire? Included are genealogies of the following families that make the connections of the Gardners and Thoreaus: Gardner, Lowell, Patten, Billings and Thoreau
